# ABS: Cycles

Monomer costs and appliance booms set the margin

Source page: https://www.materialinsights.org/chemicals/abs/cycles/

What this tab covers How its prices and margins move: past booms and busts with price levels, the spread or margin that the industry watches, the drivers of the cycle and the metrics to track.

ABS margins follow two things: the weighted cost of its three monomers and Chinese demand for appliances and electronics. When monomer prices fall faster than ABS, margins widen, as in 2008 and early 2020. Consumer booms, such as the 2020-2021 stay-at-home appliance surge, lift ABS far above monomer cost. Since 2022 Chinese capacity growth has kept margins thin. The floor is set by the cash cost of non-integrated producers buying monomers at spot; the ceiling by substitution to HIPS or polypropylene.
The spread to watch **ABS minus weighted monomer cost (about 0.58 x styrene + 0.23 x acrylonitrile + 0.19 x butadiene)**

At early-2026 Asian feed prices the weighted monomer cost is about $1,050/t (derived from the styrene, acrylonitrile and butadiene tiles). Non-integrated producers need about $200-300/t over that to cover conversion and a return (indicative). Current ABS prices are behind paywalls (Polymerupdate, ICIS).

#### Booms and busts

1. Late 2008

The financial crisis crashed demand. ABS fell together with butadiene and acrylonitrile, and sellers liquidated cargoes at lower levels.

Asian ABS offers slipped below $1,500/t CFR China main ports in early November 2008, with $50/t cuts (Plastemart, 7 Nov 2008)

2. 2020-2021

Stay-at-home spending on appliances, electronics and toys met tight monomer supply and logistics disruption. Margins reached record levels.

ABS CFR China rose to about $2,500-3,000/t in early 2021 (indicative, industry price reports)

3. 2022-2025

China added several Mt/yr of capacity while appliance exports and property-linked demand softened. Imports into China fell and Korean and Taiwanese exporters cut runs.

ABS CFR China mostly about $1,300-1,600/t (indicative); butadiene fell $470-530/t during 2025 (S&P Global Platts via butadiene tile)

4. March 2026

The Hormuz disruption cut Gulf styrene exports and lifted Asian styrene to a one-year high, raising ABS feed costs.

Asian styrene $1,030/t on 2 Mar 2026 (S&P Global via styrene tile); ABS level not published in sources reached

#### What drives the cycle

- **Chinese appliance and electronics output.** China takes over half of world ABS; refrigerator, washing machine and TV production sets demand.
- **Chinese capacity additions.** Each 0.5-1.2 Mt/yr plant displaces imports from Korea and Taiwan and pushes surplus to Southeast Asia and India.
- **Styrene and butadiene prices.** Styrene is about half of cash cost; butadiene is the most volatile of the three monomers.
- **Car production.** Interior trims and plated parts follow vehicle output.

#### Metrics to track

| Metric | Why it matters | Where to track it |
|---|---|---|
| **ABS CFR China and CFR India weekly prices** | Regional price setter | Polymerupdate, ICIS, Platts |
| **Chinese ABS operating rates and inventories** | Supply signal | Mysteel, OilChem |
| **China appliance output (refrigerators, washing machines, AC)** | Demand signal | National Bureau of Statistics of China |
| **Styrene-ABS spread** | Margin health | derived from Platts or ICIS |
