# Acetic acid: Emissions

Coal-based carbon monoxide can double the footprint

Source page: https://www.materialinsights.org/chemicals/acetic_acid/emissions/

What this tab covers The greenhouse-gas footprint per tonne, split by lifecycle phase (feedstock, production, movement, use, end of life), the global total, other environmental impacts, levers and low-carbon routes, India's position, and where the investment opportunity lies. Emission intensity 2.40 t CO2e per t range 1.0-3.5 · 0.54 t methanol at the 2.6 t world average (methanol tile, IEA-derived), CO from gas or coal, plus steam; low end gas-based US Gulf, high end coal-based China Global emissions per year 43.0 Mt CO2e per year 2025 · 2.4 t x about 18 Mt

Per t of glacial acetic acid, cradle-to-gate. Intensity: derived from methanol tile (IEA 2023) and IRENA 2021 (indicative). Global total: derived (indicative).

#### Share of footprint by lifecycle phase
 Feedstock 84% Production / process 13% Movement 3%

#### Footprint by lifecycle phase

| Phase | Intensity | Share | Main sources of emissions | Notes | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| **Feedstock** | about 2.0 t CO2e/t (methanol about 1.4, CO about 0.6) | 84% | coal gasification in China versus gas reforming elsewhere | coal-based CO can double this phase | derived (indicative) |
| **Production / process** | about 0.3 t CO2e/t | 13% | steam for distillation, power | low-water processes (AO Plus, Cativa) use less steam | indicative |
| **Movement** | about 0.05-0.1 t CO2/t | 3% | chemical tankers, heated ISO tanks | China to India about 6,000-8,000 km | indicative |
| **Use** | carbon mostly stays in VAM polymers, PET and cellulose acetate | – | ester solvents evaporate as VOCs | solvent VOCs form ozone and later CO2 | indicative |
| **End of life** | depends on derivative | – | PET recycling or incineration; cigarette filters litter | cellulose acetate filters are a major litter item | indicative |

#### Other environmental impacts

Corrosive spills; ester solvent VOCs; cellulose acetate cigarette filters as litter.

#### Levers to cut emissions

- Low-carbon methanol and CO (bio or e-methanol, captured CO2 to CO)
- Carbon capture on coal gasifiers supplying CO
- Low-water carbonylation to cut steam
- Renewable steam and power

#### India

India's acetic acid footprint is mostly embedded in Chinese coal-based imports. Reliance's planned 3 Mt plant would add a large domestic source whose intensity depends on how its CO and methanol are made (not published).
Emission figures are indicative global averages from the life-cycle studies named; actual footprints vary widely by site, energy mix and method.

#### Low-carbon routes

| Route | Intensity | Cost premium | Status | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| **Acetic acid from recycled CO2 via methanol** | lower; depends on hydrogen source | not published | Celanese announced capture of up to about 180 kt CO2 a year at Clear Lake to make methanol for its acetyls chain (indicative, from memory of 2023 announcements) | indicative |
| **Bio-acetic acid by fermentation** | low if bio-ethanol is low carbon (indicative) | large (indicative) | niche food and specialty markets | indicative |

For a climate investor The decarbonisation lever is upstream, in methanol and CO. A new Indian acetyls chain (Reliance, GNFC) could be designed around captured CO2 and renewable hydrogen, or at least capture-ready gasification. What has to be true: buyers of PTA, VAM and pharma intermediates paying for lower-carbon inputs, which is not yet the case in India.
