# Activated carbon: Overview

Clean water, mercury capture, sugar and gold from one sponge

What this tab covers What the chemical is, how big its market is, what it is used for (with shares, volumes, why it wins and what could replace it), and its chain from raw material to end user. Ends with three things to remember.

Activated carbon is charcoal or coal heated with steam, or wood treated with phosphoric acid, to open a network of pores with 500-1,500 m2 of surface per gram. It traps organic pollutants, chlorine, mercury and gold. The market was worth about $6.6 billion in 2024 and is growing about 9% a year, driven by drinking water rules on PFAS. Coal-based carbon from China and the US competes with coconut-shell carbon from Sri Lanka, India, the Philippines and Indonesia. For India it is the largest coconut by-product export, and a coconut-based product is far lower in fossil carbon than a coal-based one.
Volume about 3 Mt a year (indicative, basis: $6.6 billion / about $2,000-2,500/t average value); HS 380210 world imports 690,807 t in Jan-Sep 2025 (ICC) Market value $6.6 billion (2024), forecast $10.2 billion by 2029 Growth 9.3% a year in value, 2024-2029 (MarketsandMarkets); India $252 million (2025) growing 5.0% a year to 2034 (IMARC) MarketsandMarkets via GlobeNewswire (Mar 2025); International Coconut Community market review (Dec 2025); IMARC (2026)

#### Key uses

| Use | Share | Annual volume | Why this commodity | Alternatives |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| **Water treatment: drinking water, PFAS and micropollutant removal, wastewater, point-of-use filters** | 45% | about 1.35 Mtbasis | Granular carbon beds remove taste, odour, pesticides, PFAS and disinfection by-products at low cost per cubic metre. Spent carbon can be reactivated. The US EPA's 2024 PFAS drinking water limits created a wave of new filter beds. MarketsandMarkets (2025); share indicative | Ion-exchange resins (PFAS) Reverse osmosis and nanofiltration Ozone and advanced oxidation |
| **Air and gas purification: flue gas mercury capture, VOC control, vehicle evaporative canisters, biogas and natural gas treatment** | 25% | about 0.75 Mtbasis | Powdered carbon injected into coal plant flue gas captures mercury; carbon canisters in petrol cars hold fuel vapour; beds clean solvent fumes and siloxanes from biogas. MarketsandMarkets (2025: air purification, mercury removal and VOC canisters named); share indicative | Scrubbers and catalytic oxidisers Zeolites and polymer adsorbents |
| **Food and beverage processing: sugar and sweetener decolourisation, edible oils, drinks, glycerine** | 12% | about 0.36 Mtbasis | Wood-based and powdered carbons remove colour and off-flavours from sugar syrups, glucose and spirits. Food grades need low ash and heavy metals. MarketsandMarkets (2025); share indicative | Bone char (sugar) Ion-exchange resins Bleaching earth (oils) |
| **Gold recovery (carbon-in-pulp and carbon-in-leach)** | 6% | about 0.18 Mtbasis | Hard coconut-shell granules adsorb gold cyanide from leach slurries and survive abrasion. Gold mines are a premium market for Sri Lankan, Philippine and Indian carbon. Coconut tile; MarketsandMarkets (2025: gold recovery as opportunity); share indicative | Resin-in-pulp Merrill-Crowe zinc precipitation |
| **Pharmaceutical and medical (API purification, poisoning treatment, dialysis)** | 5% | about 0.15 Mtbasis | High-purity carbons decolourise and purify drug intermediates and are used as an antidote for poisoning. MarketsandMarkets (2025); share indicative | Chromatography resins |
| **Other: supercapacitor electrodes, catalyst supports, solvent recovery, electronics** | 7% | about 0.21 Mtbasis | Coconut-derived carbons with very high surface area are the standard electrode material for supercapacitors; carbons also support precious-metal catalysts. Indicative | Carbon aerogels and graphene (premium) |

No public world split was found; MarketsandMarkets (2025) lists water treatment, air purification, food processing, mercury removal, medical and mining as segments without shares. Shares are indicative; volumes are share x about 3 Mt (indicative).

#### From raw material to user

1. **Raw material** Coconut shells, bituminous coal or lignite, wood or peat; coconut shell charcoal sold at about $544-1,000/t in Sri Lanka, Indonesia and India in H1 2025 (ICC).
2. **Carbonisation** Shells are charred in pits or kilns; coal is crushed and agglomerated (indicative).
3. **Activation** Char is heated to about 800-1,000 C with steam in rotary kilns or multiple-hearth furnaces, burning off part of the carbon to create pores; yield about 30-50% on char (indicative).
4. **Sizing and finishing** Crushed and graded into granular (GAC), powdered (PAC) or extruded pellets; acid washed or impregnated for special uses (IMARC process flow).
5. **Quality testing** Iodine number, CTC activity, hardness, ash and moisture decide grade and price (IMARC).
6. **Use and reactivation** Spent GAC from water and gas plants is thermally reactivated and reused; PAC is used once and landfilled or burnt.

#### Three things to know

- Sri Lankan coconut-shell carbon export prices rose from about $3,000/t (Jan 2025) to over $4,300/t (Oct 2025) as shell charcoal ran short (ICC).
- India exported $306 million of activated carbon in 2024, 13.2% of world export value and third after China and the US (UN Comtrade, HS 380210); the US is its top buyer.
- The market is forecast to grow from $6.6 billion (2024) to $10.2 billion (2029), 9.3% a year, led by water treatment (MarketsandMarkets).
