# Antibiotic intermediates (6-APA, 7-ACA): Emissions

Why fermentation's power hunger drives its carbon footprint

Why fermentation's power hunger drives its carbon footprint What this tab covers The greenhouse-gas footprint per tonne, split by lifecycle phase (feedstock, production, movement, use, end of life), the global total, other environmental impacts, levers and low-carbon routes, India's position, and where the investment opportunity lies.

Per kg of penicillin G potassium or 6-APA, cradle-to-gate. Intensity: derived (indicative).

#### Share of footprint by lifecycle phase
 Feedstock 35% Production / process 60% Movement 5%

#### Footprint by lifecycle phase

| Phase | Intensity | Share | Main sources of emissions | Notes | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| **Feedstock** | glucose, nutrients, solvent | 35% | maize starch and soy | indicative | indicative |
| **Production / process** | aeration, agitation, cooling and sterilisation | 60% | coal power | indicative | indicative |
| **Movement** | container freight | 5% | distance | indicative | indicative |
| **Use** | not applicable | – | | converted to antibiotics | |
| **End of life** | mycelium and broth treatment | – | waste biomass | may be inactivated and used as fertiliser or incinerated | |

#### Other environmental impacts

Antibiotic residues in fermentation effluent drive antimicrobial resistance; studies near Indian and Chinese production clusters have found very high concentrations.

#### Levers to cut emissions

- Renewable power for fermentation
- Higher-titre strains
- Waste heat recovery and efficient aeration
- Effluent antibiotic destruction to AMR Industry Alliance limits

#### India

Lyfius runs large fermenters in Andhra Pradesh; its power source and emissions are not published.
Emission figures are indicative global averages from the life-cycle studies named; actual footprints vary widely by site, energy mix and method.

#### Low-carbon routes

| Route | Intensity | Cost premium | Status | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| **Direct fermentation of 7-ADCA with engineered strains** | fewer chemical steps (indicative) | not published | commercial at Centrient | qualitative |

For a climate investor Fermentation intermediates are power-hungry, so renewable power purchase agreements at Kakinada-type sites cut both cost and emissions. AMR-safe effluent treatment is a second need. Viability depends on Indian trade protection outcomes in 2027.
