# Battery cathode materials: Emissions

Why nickel-rich cathode carries twice LFP's carbon footprint

Why nickel-rich cathode carries twice LFP's carbon footprint What this tab covers The greenhouse-gas footprint per tonne, split by lifecycle phase (feedstock, production, movement, use, end of life), the global total, other environmental impacts, levers and low-carbon routes, India's position, and where the investment opportunity lies. Emission intensity 10.0 t CO2e per t range about 5-15 for LFP; about 15-30 for NMC811 · indicative mix-weighted average (about 70% LFP at about 7 t, 30% ternary and other at about 20 t), built from lithium (13 t per t LCE), nickel (13-40 t per t Ni) and cobalt (28 t per t metal) tile intensities x stoichiometry, plus calcination Global emissions per year 50.0 Mt CO2e per year 2025 · about 10 t x 4.95 Mt shipped (SNE)

Per t of cathode active material, cradle-to-gate. Intensity: lithium, nickel and cobalt tiles (Kelly et al. 2021; IEEFA 2024; Cobalt Institute 2019); derived (indicative). Global total: derived (indicative).

#### Footprint by lifecycle phase

| Phase | Intensity | Share | Main sources of emissions | Notes | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| **Feedstock** | about 7 t CO2e per t (LFP about 4-5; NMC811 about 15-17) | 70% | Lithium refining from spodumene in China, coal-powered Indonesian nickel, cobalt refining, iron phosphate precipitation | Brine lithium and HPAL nickel are lower | metal tiles; derived (indicative) |
| **Production / process** | about 2.5 t CO2e per t | 25% | Electric roller kilns and milling on coal-heavy Chinese grids; wastewater treatment | Indicative | Indicative |
| **Movement** | about 0.5 t CO2e per t | 5% | Shipping ores and concentrates to China, then powder to cell plants | Indicative | Indicative |
| **Use** | not applicable | – | Cathodes enable EVs and storage that displace fuel combustion | Avoided emissions are counted at the vehicle or grid level | Not applicable |
| **End of life** | not published | – | Recycling of black mass by hydrometallurgy recovers lithium, nickel and cobalt | EU recycled-content rules from 2031; India's EPR rules create feed | EU Battery Regulation |

#### Other environmental impacts

Nickel and cobalt dusts are toxic; LFP precursor plants produce ammonium sulphate wastewater; upstream nickel in Indonesia drives deforestation and coal use; DRC cobalt carries artisanal mining risks.

#### Levers to cut emissions

- Shift to LFP and LMFP: cobalt- and nickel-free, roughly half the footprint of NMC811 (indicative)
- Lithium from brine or low-carbon conversion (about 3 t vs about 20 t CO2e per t LCE, lithium tile)
- Renewable power for kilns and precursor plants
- Recycled metal from black mass
- Lower-carbon iron phosphate routes: Sudeep claims 4.17 t CO2 per t vs 14.34 t for conventional processes

#### India

India has no cathode output yet, so its footprint is embedded in imported cells. New LFP plants on Indian grid power would carry higher process emissions unless paired with renewable supply.
Emission figures are indicative global averages from the life-cycle studies named; actual footprints vary widely by site, energy mix and method.

#### Low-carbon routes

| Route | Intensity | Cost premium | Status | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| **LFP made with brine lithium and renewable power** | about 4-5 t CO2e per t (indicative) | small; brine lithium is low cost | Altmin plans Brazilian and Bolivian lithium (Benchmark Source, 2025) | lithium tile; Benchmark Source (Nov 2025) |
| **Cathode from recycled black mass** | not published; lower than primary (indicative) | depends on black mass payables | Huayou, GEM, Brunp in China; Indian recyclers under EPR (indicative) | Indicative |
| **Low-emission iron phosphate precursor** | 4.17 t CO2 per t claimed vs 14.34 t conventional | not published | Sudeep Advanced Materials, Gujarat: 35 kt by 2027 | Benchmark Source (Nov 2025, company claim) |

For a climate investor Cathode is the biggest value step in a cell and India has none of it, while China's suspended export licensing of high-density LFP, ternary precursors and cathode equipment could return after 10 November 2026 unless the suspension is extended. The opening is LFP and precursor capacity sized to India's cell plants, with renewable power and non-Chinese lithium, which also meets EU carbon-footprint rules. For it to work, cell plants must actually ramp (only 1.4 GWh of about 40 GWh awarded under the ACC PLI had been commissioned by October 2025, and no incentive had been paid, per IEEFA) and buyers must qualify Indian powder. Builders: Altmin, Himadri, Epsilon and Sudeep (precursor).
