Where electrolyte's modest carbon footprint really comes from What this tab covers The greenhouse-gas footprint per tonne, split by lifecycle phase (feedstock, production, movement, use, end of life), the global total, other environmental impacts, levers and low-carbon routes, India's position, and where the investment opportunity lies. Emission intensity 3.50 t CO2e per t range about 2-6 · indicative: about 11% LiPF6 at about 10-20 t CO2e per t plus about 89% carbonate solvents and additives at about 1.5-2.5 t; not published by producers Global emissions per year 8.00 Mt CO2e per year 2025 · about 3.5 t x 2.38 Mt

Per t of blended electrolyte, cradle-to-gate. Intensity: derived (indicative). Global total: derived (indicative).

#### Share of footprint by lifecycle phase
 Feedstock 68% Production / process 26% Movement 6%

#### Footprint by lifecycle phase

| Phase | Intensity | Share | Main sources of emissions | Notes | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| **Feedstock** | about 2.4 t CO2e per t | 68% | ethylene oxide and methanol for solvents; fluorspar, HF and lithium carbonate for LiPF6 | Indicative split | Indicative |
| **Production / process** | about 0.9 t CO2e per t | 26% | LiPF6 synthesis and drying, solvent distillation, inert blending | Coal-heavy Chinese power | Indicative |
| **Movement** | about 0.2 t CO2e per t | 6% | drums and ISO tanks to cell plants | Indicative | Indicative |
| **Use** | not applicable | – | sealed in cells | Electrolyte fuels fires in thermal runaway | Not applicable |
| **End of life** | not published | – | evaporated or burned in pyrometallurgical recycling; some solvent recovery | Fluorine can be released as HF | Indicative |

#### Other environmental impacts

HF and fluoride emissions from LiPF6 plants; solvent VOCs; fluorine release in battery fires and recycling.

#### Levers to cut emissions

- Integrate LiPF6 with low-carbon HF and renewable power
- Bio- or CO2-based solvents (EC already uses CO2)
- Solvent recovery in recycling
- Lower-fluorine salts and additives

#### India

India's electrolyte footprint is embedded in imported cells; local blends from Neogen are small.
Emission figures are indicative global averages from the life-cycle studies named; actual footprints vary widely by site, energy mix and method.

#### Low-carbon routes

| Route | Intensity | Cost premium | Status | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| **Electrolyte from CO2-derived carbonates and renewable power** | not published | not published | EC is made from CO2 and ethylene oxide at scale; full low-carbon chains not found in sources used | Indicative |

For a climate investor Electrolyte is a small share of cell cost but a large share of supply risk, because China makes about 93% of it and over 90% of LiPF6. India has the fluorine chemistry base (Navin Fluorine, SRF, GFCL with HF and fluorochemicals) to make LiPF6 and LiFSI near future cell plants. For this to work, Indian cell plants must ramp, fluorspar must be secured (India imports most acidspar) and qualification must be won. The 2025-26 price spike from RMB 49,600/t to above RMB 170,000/t shows the margin swings any entrant must survive. Neogen and GFCL are the named first movers.
