# Battery electrolytes: Overview

Where battery electrolyte goes, from EVs to grid storage

What this tab covers What the chemical is, how big its market is, what it is used for (with shares, volumes, why it wins and what could replace it), and its chain from raw material to end user. Ends with three things to remember.

A lithium-ion electrolyte is a liquid of about 11% lithium salt, usually lithium hexafluorophosphate (LiPF6), dissolved in carbonate solvents such as ethylene carbonate and dimethyl carbonate, plus a few percent of additives. It is cheap per cell but chemically demanding: LiPF6 is made from hydrofluoric acid and reacts with water to form HF. World shipments were 2.38 Mt in 2025, over 90% from China. LiPF6 prices tripled in late 2025 after a two-year slump. India has small electrolyte blending but no large salt plant.
Volume 2.38 Mt electrolyte shipped in 2025 (China 2.21 Mt); LiPF6 259 kt; carbonate solvents about 2.30 Mt Market value about $5-7 billion (2025, indicative, basis: 2.38 Mt x about $2,100-2,800/t, built from 11% LiPF6 at about RMB 50,000-170,000/t and solvents at RMB 4,500-7,000/t) Growth 48.7% a year from 2020 to 2025; projected 6.38 Mt by 2030 (about 22% a year) HKEX listing document of a Chinese electrolyte solvent maker, industry consultant data (Apr 2026); value derived (indicative)

#### Key uses

| Use | Share | Annual volume | Why this commodity | Alternatives |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| **Electric vehicle batteries (BEV, PHEV, HEV)** | 62% | 1.475 Mt installedbasis | Every lithium-ion cell needs a liquid electrolyte that conducts lithium ions, wets the electrodes and forms a stable film on the anode. LiPF6 in carbonates does this at the lowest cost and across a wide voltage window. SNE Research (12 Feb 2026); HKEX document (Apr 2026) | Semi-solid and solid-state electrolytes (early) LiFSI-rich electrolytes for fast charge |
| **Stationary energy storage (LFP cells)** | 33% | about 0.78 Mtbasis | Storage cells use the same LiPF6-carbonate system with additives tuned for long cycle life rather than power. GGII via Tiger Brokers (Feb 2026); derived | Sodium-ion electrolytes (NaPF6) Aqueous flow-battery electrolytes |
| **Consumer electronics, power tools and other** | 5% | about 0.13 Mtbasis | High-voltage LCO cells for phones need special additives and fluorinated solvents to resist oxidation. Derived (indicative) | Polymer (gel) electrolytes |

EV share from SNE's 2025 EV installs over total 2025 shipments in the HKEX document; storage and other split derived from GGII cell shipments and is indicative.

#### From raw material to user

1. **Fluorspar to HF** About 2.1 t of acid-grade fluorspar makes 1 t of HF (hydrofluoric acid tile); China mines 60% of fluorspar.
2. **LiPF6 synthesis** Lithium fluoride (from lithium carbonate and HF) reacts with phosphorus pentafluoride in anhydrous HF; crystals are dried to ppm moisture. World shipments were 259 kt in 2025.
3. **Solvents** Ethylene carbonate (EC) is made from ethylene oxide and CO2; DMC, EMC and DEC by transesterification. About 2.30 Mt of solvents shipped in 2025.
4. **Additives** Vinylene carbonate (VC), fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC), LiFSI, LiPO2F2 and others at a few percent tune film formation and life.
5. **Blending** Salt, solvents and additives are blended under dry nitrogen to under about 20 ppm water (indicative) and shipped in sealed steel drums or ISO tanks.
6. **Filling and formation** Cell makers inject electrolyte, about 1.3 kg per kWh (indicative), and form the solid-electrolyte interphase in the first charge.

#### Three things to know

- Chinese suppliers held 90.4% of EV electrolyte in Q4 2025 and Tinci alone supplied 343 kt (SNE Research).
- LiPF6 fell from about RMB 85,000/t in 2020 to a low of RMB 49,600/t in July 2025, then rose above RMB 170,000/t by Q4 2025 (HKEX document).
- Each tonne of LiPF6 needs about 0.8 t of HF and 0.24 t of lithium carbonate, so electrolytes link the fluorspar and lithium chains (stoichiometry).
