# Electronic specialty gases: Cycles

Wars, fires and embargoes: the gas shocks that hit chips

Source page: https://www.materialinsights.org/chemicals/electronic_gases/cycles/

What this tab covers How its prices and margins move: past booms and busts with price levels, the spread or margin that the industry watches, the drivers of the cycle and the metrics to track.

Electronic gas demand follows wafer starts and the number of process steps, so it grows faster than chip unit volumes but dips in memory downturns. Prices are mostly contract-based and rarely published. The big cycles are supply shocks: Japan's 2019 export curbs on Korea, the 2022 loss of Ukrainian neon, helium shortages in 2021-23, and the 2026 halt of Qatari helium. Each produced rationing, spot spikes and a push for second sources and recycling. Listed suppliers' electronics segments show the demand cycle more clearly than prices do.
The spread to watch **Not applicable (contract-priced specialties)**

Margins are tracked through electronics segment results of Linde, Air Liquide, Merck and Resonac rather than a public spread.

#### Booms and busts

1. 2019

Japan restricted exports of HF, photoresists and fluorinated polyimide to Korea, forcing Korean fabs to qualify Korean and Chinese suppliers (indicative).

not published

2. 2022

Russia's invasion shut Mariupol's steelworks and Ukrainian neon purifiers that supplied nearly half the world's neon. Fabs in Taiwan, Korea and Wales stockpiled (Conway).

neon spot prices rose several-fold (indicative); US neon import reliance climbed from 33% (2021) to 52% (2025) (USGS)

3. 2021-2023

Helium Shortage 4.0: Amur fire, Cliffside outage and sanctions cut supply.

PNNL paid $39/L for liquid helium in 2023, double two years earlier (helium tile, Physics Today)

4. 2026

Ras Laffan halted production after the Hormuz near-closure; Russia imposed helium export controls from 14 April 2026. Korea had sourced 64.7% of its helium from Qatar in 2025.

helium spot prices doubled; contract prices could rise 40-60% if prolonged (IUMI, Jun 2026)

#### What drives the cycle

- **Wafer starts and process steps.** 3D NAND layers and gate-all-around logic add deposition, etch and clean steps per wafer.
- **Single-source supply shocks.** Neon (Ukraine), helium (Qatar, Russia) and fluorine gases (Japan, Korea) are each concentrated.
- **Material substitution.** Molybdenum for tungsten, on-site F2 for NF3 and lower-GWP etchants change which gases grow.
- **Localisation policy.** US, Japanese, Indian and Chinese fab incentives pull gas plants next to fabs.

#### Metrics to track

| Metric | Why it matters | Where to track it |
|---|---|---|
| **Electronic gas market forecasts** | Demand | TECHCET |
| **Helium contract and spot prices, allocation notices** | Supply stress | Kornbluth Helium Consulting; gasworld; Smith |
| **Semiconductor equipment billings and wafer starts** | Leading demand indicator | SEMI |
| **Industrial gas company electronics segment sales** | Revenue cycle | Linde, Air Liquide, Merck reports |
