# EPDM: Characteristics

How ethylene and ENB content tune a grade

Source page: https://www.materialinsights.org/chemicals/epdm/characteristics/

What this tab covers The physical and chemical properties that set its grade, price and uses, with the commercial grades and the standards that define them.

EPDM grades are defined by ethylene content (crystallinity and green strength), ENB content (cure speed), Mooney viscosity and oil extension. Seal extruders want fast-curing high-ENB grades; roofing and cable want specific electrical and weathering properties.

#### Properties that matter commercially

| Property | Value / specification | Why it matters | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| **Ethylene content** | about 45-75% by weight (indicative) | Higher gives strength and filler loading; lower gives low-temperature flexibility | typical (indicative) |
| **ENB content** | about 2-12% (indicative) | Cure speed and cross-link density; medium-diene grades held about 52% of demand in 2022 (ChemAnalyst via GII) | ChemAnalyst via GII; typical (indicative) |
| **Service temperature** | about -40 to 150 C (indicative) | Engine bay and outdoor use | typical (indicative) |
| **Mooney viscosity ML1+4 at 125 C** | about 20-90 (indicative) | Extrusion and moulding behaviour | typical datasheet (indicative) |

#### Commercial grades

- high-ENB fast-cure seal grades
- low-diene grades
- oil-extended grades
- roofing grades
- cable insulation grades
- EPM (no diene) for lubricant additives
- metallocene grades
- TPV feed grades
