# Formaldehyde: Characteristics

Strength versus stability: the concentration trade-off

Source page: https://www.materialinsights.org/chemicals/formaldehyde/characteristics/

What this tab covers The physical and chemical properties that set its grade, price and uses, with the commercial grades and the standards that define them.

Formaldehyde is sold by concentration and residual methanol. Higher concentrations cut freight and water in resins but precipitate if cooled; methanol stabilises the solution but lowers resin quality. For panel makers, the free formaldehyde left in cured resin decides the emission class of the board.

#### Properties that matter commercially

| Property | Value / specification | Why it matters | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| **Concentration** | 37%, 44%, 50% and 55% solutions by weight | price and freight are per tonne of solution | industry grades (indicative) |
| **Residual methanol** | under 1% (oxide process) to 1-8% (silver process or stabilised, indicative) | affects resin reactivity and stability | indicative |
| **Formic acid** | under about 0.02-0.03% (indicative) | acidity affects resin curing | indicative |
| **Storage temperature** | above about 20-40 C depending on strength (indicative) | avoids paraformaldehyde precipitation | indicative |
| **Board emission class** | EU E1 limit 0.1 ppm (0.124 mg/m3); new EU cap 0.062 mg/m3 | sets which resin a panel maker must buy | EN 717-1; Regulation (EU) 2023/1464 |

#### Commercial grades

- Formalin 37% (methanol-stabilised)
- Low-methanol 44-55% for UF and POM
- Paraformaldehyde 91-96% solid
- Trioxane for POM
- UF concentrate (UFC 85) for urea fertiliser coating
