# Formaldehyde: Emissions

Nearly all the carbon arrives inside the methanol

What this tab covers The greenhouse-gas footprint per tonne, split by lifecycle phase (feedstock, production, movement, use, end of life), the global total, other environmental impacts, levers and low-carbon routes, India's position, and where the investment opportunity lies. Emission intensity 3.10 t CO2e per t range 0.7-4.5 · about 1.15 t methanol at the 2.6 t CO2e/t world average (methanol tile, IEA-derived) plus process; low end gas methanol with oxide-process steam credit, high end coal methanol Global emissions per year 70.0 Mt CO2e per year 2022 · 3.1 t x 23 Mt

Per t of formaldehyde (100% basis), cradle-to-gate. Intensity: derived from methanol tile (IEA 2023) and IRENA 2021 (indicative). Global total: derived (indicative).

#### Share of footprint by lifecycle phase

#### Footprint by lifecycle phase

| Phase | Intensity | Share | Main sources of emissions | Notes | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| **Feedstock** | about 3.0 t CO2e/t (embedded methanol) | 96% | coal versus gas behind the methanol | Chinese coal-based methanol roughly triples this | methanol tile (indicative) |
| **Production / process** | about 0.1 t CO2e/t; can be negative for oxide plants exporting steam | 3% | electricity for blowers, off-gas burning | the reaction is exothermic | indicative |
| **Movement** | about 0.02-0.05 t CO2/t | 1% | short road haul | methanol import shipping counted in feedstock | indicative |
| **Use** | carbon stored in resins and boards | – | panels hold the carbon for their service life | indoor formaldehyde emissions are a health, not climate, issue | indicative |
| **End of life** | released when boards are burned or decay | – | incineration, landfill, panel recycling | UF-bonded boards are hard to recycle | indicative |

#### Other environmental impacts

Indoor air exposure from panels and laminates; occupational cancer risk; formaldehyde is also a secondary air pollutant formed from VOCs.

#### Levers to cut emissions

- Low-carbon methanol (bio or e-methanol) as feed
- Oxide-process plants with steam export
- Low-emission resin formulations and pMDI, which also cut indoor exposure
- Bio-based binders (soy, lignin, tannin) for panels

#### India

India's formaldehyde footprint is mostly the imported Gulf gas methanol behind it; any shift to domestic coal-to-methanol would roughly triple it (derived from NITI Aayog and IRENA figures).
Emission figures are indicative global averages from the life-cycle studies named; actual footprints vary widely by site, energy mix and method.

#### Low-carbon routes

| Route | Intensity | Cost premium | Status | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| **Formaldehyde from renewable methanol** | near zero cradle-to-gate (indicative) | renewable methanol at about $320-1,600/t against $100-250/t fossil (IRENA 2021, indicative) | LEGO began using renewable methanol-based plastics in 2026 with European Energy and Novo (CRU BCInsight, Oct 2026), not formaldehyde-specific | IRENA (2021); CRU BCInsight (Oct 2026) |
| **Formaldehyde-free bio binders** | lower; product-specific | often higher than UF (indicative) | commercial in some plywood and insulation lines (indicative) | indicative |

For a climate investor The climate and health angles point the same way: low-emission or formaldehyde-free binders for India's fast-growing plywood, MDF and laminate industry, and renewable methanol as the feed. What has to be true: Indian or export-market emission limits that make buyers pay for low-emission boards. The EU 2026 cap and US TSCA rules already apply to export panels.
