# Hydrochloric acid: Emissions

Carbon depends on whose chlorine it really is

Source page: https://www.materialinsights.org/chemicals/hydrochloric_acid/emissions/

What this tab covers The greenhouse-gas footprint per tonne, split by lifecycle phase (feedstock, production, movement, use, end of life), the global total, other environmental impacts, levers and low-carbon routes, India's position, and where the investment opportunity lies. Emission intensity 0.90 t CO2e per t range close to zero for by-product acid (allocation) to about 1.5 for synthesis on coal power · 0.97 t chlorine per t HCl x chlorine footprint about 0.7-1.6 t per t, plus minor absorption energy

Per t of HCl (100% basis), cradle-to-gate, direct synthesis. Intensity: derived from Euro Chlor 2022 eco-profile (indicative). Global total: not published.

#### Share of footprint by lifecycle phase
 Feedstock 92% Production / process 2% Movement 6%

#### Footprint by lifecycle phase

| Phase | Intensity | Share | Main sources of emissions | Notes | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| **Feedstock** | about 0.85 t CO2e per t | 92% | embodied footprint of chlorine and hydrogen | for by-product acid most burden is allocated to the main product | derived (indicative) |
| **Production / process** | about 0.02 t CO2e per t | 2% | cooling and pumping; the reaction releases heat | minor | indicative |
| **Movement** | about 0.05 t CO2e per t | 6% | road tankers carrying two-thirds water | shipping dilute acid is inefficient | indicative |
| **Use** | small | – | reaction with carbonates in wells and steel scale releases some CO2 | acidising carbonate rock releases about 0.6 t CO2 per t HCl reacted (stoichiometric, indicative) | stoichiometry |
| **End of life** | not applicable | – | neutralised to chloride salts | spent pickle liquor is regenerated or neutralised | indicative |

#### Other environmental impacts

Acid mist and spills; chloride loading in effluents; drug precursor diversion risk.

#### Levers to cut emissions

- Low-carbon chlorine (renewable-powered electrolysis)
- Regenerate spent pickle liquor instead of neutralising
- Recycle by-product HCl to chlorine on site

#### India

Not published; India's HCl footprint follows its coal-heavy chlor-alkali power.
Emission figures are indicative global averages from the life-cycle studies named; actual footprints vary widely by site, energy mix and method.

#### Low-carbon routes

| Route | Intensity | Cost premium | Status | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| **By-product HCl recycling and regeneration** | low (allocation) | not published | standard at large steel and isocyanate sites | indicative |

For a climate investor HCl itself is not an investment theme; it is a balancing product. The opportunity is in acid regeneration for steel pickling and in mineral-processing routes (synthetic rutile, rare earths, lithium) that can use cheap HCl from India's chlor-alkali clusters.
