# Hydrochloric acid: Overview

Pickled steel, oil wells and clean water from waste acid

What this tab covers What the chemical is, how big its market is, what it is used for (with shares, volumes, why it wins and what could replace it), and its chain from raw material to end user. Ends with three things to remember.

Hydrochloric acid (HCl dissolved in water, usually 30-36%) is mainly a by-product of making isocyanates, chlorinated organics and fluorochemicals, or is burned from chlorine and hydrogen at chlor-alkali plants that need an outlet for chlorine. Most is used or recycled where it is made. The merchant market is low value: in August 2026 acid traded at about $27/t FOB China and $120-160/t in Europe and the US. It matters as a balancing valve for chlorine and as an essential input for steel finishing, oil wells and water treatment.
Volume not published; most HCl is captive or recycled within chlorine chains Market value not published; at $27-160/t the merchant market is small in value (indicative) Growth tracks chlorine and isocyanate output, about 2-3% a year (indicative) Procurement Resource HCl price trends, Q3 2026; indicative

#### Key uses

| Use | Share | Annual volume | Why this commodity | Alternatives |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| **Steel pickling** | n/a | not publishedbasis | HCl removes iron oxide scale from hot-rolled steel faster than sulphuric acid and leaves a cleaner surface. Spent acid is regenerated in roasters, recovering iron oxide and HCl. Demand follows steel output. Procurement Resource 2026 (qualitative) | Sulphuric acid pickling Mechanical descaling |
| **Oil and gas well acidising** | n/a | not publishedbasis | HCl dissolves carbonate rock to stimulate wells; US shale drilling makes it a large US outlet. Procurement Resource 2026 (qualitative) | Organic acids (formic, acetic) Hydrofluoric acid blends for sandstone |
| **Water treatment chemicals (PAC, ferric chloride) and pH control** | n/a | not publishedbasis | Poly-aluminium chloride and ferric chloride, made from HCl, are the main coagulants for drinking and waste water in India and China. indicative | Aluminium sulphate (alum) Ferric sulphate |
| **Chemical intermediates (oxychlorination to EDC, chlorides, food and pharma)** | n/a | not publishedbasis | Balanced EDC/VCM plants feed HCl back into oxychlorination, using it as a chlorine source. HCl also makes calcium chloride, zinc chloride and food-grade uses such as corn syrup and gelatin. indicative | Fresh chlorine |
| **Mineral processing (ilmenite to synthetic rutile, rare earths, lithium)** | n/a | not publishedbasis | Leaching iron from ilmenite to make synthetic rutile is a major use in India's Kerala and Tamil Nadu mineral-sands plants. indicative | Sulphuric acid leaching |

No public global use split exists; shares are left blank. Steel pickling and oil-well acidising are usually cited as the largest merchant uses (Procurement Resource 2026).

#### From raw material to user

1. **By-product generation** Making 1 t of MDI or TDI via phosgene releases HCl; each chlorine atom not built into the product ends up as HCl.
2. **Direct synthesis** Chlor-alkali plants burn chlorine in hydrogen (Cl2 + H2 to 2 HCl): about 0.97 t Cl2 and 0.03 t H2 per t of HCl gas.
3. **Absorption** HCl gas is absorbed in water to give 30-36% acid.
4. **Distribution** Rubber-lined road tankers, ISO tanks and rail cars within a few hundred km; very little moves by sea.
5. **Regeneration** Spent pickle liquor is roasted to recover HCl and iron oxide.

#### Three things to know

- HCl is mostly a by-product, so supply follows chlorine and isocyanate output, not acid demand.
- Prices range from about $27/t FOB China to $162/t FOB US (August 2026), showing how local the market is.
- Chlor-alkali plants turn surplus chlorine into HCl at about 0.97 t chlorine per t HCl, which makes acid a dumping ground when chlorine is weak.
