# Reagents and high-purity lab chemicals: Overview

Who buys tiny bottles of ultra-pure chemicals, and why

Source page: https://www.materialinsights.org/chemicals/lab_reagents/overview/

What this tab covers What the chemical is, how big its market is, what it is used for (with shares, volumes, why it wins and what could replace it), and its chain from raw material to end user. Ends with three things to remember.

Laboratory reagents are chemicals sold in small packs at very high purity for analysis, research, quality control and diagnostics: analytical-grade acids and salts, HPLC and LC-MS solvents, buffers, enzymes and molecular biology kits, and certified reference standards. The market was $30.87 billion in 2025 (Market Research Future). Most products are commodity chemicals purified, tested and packed with certificates, so value comes from purity, consistency and distribution, not tonnage. Merck KGaA (MilliporeSigma), Thermo Fisher and Avantor lead; India has domestic makers such as SRL, Loba Chemie and Spectrochem.
Volume not published (small tonnage; sold in grams to drums) Market value $30.87 billion (2025); $32.28 billion (2026e) Growth 4.58% a year to $48.31 billion by 2035 (MRFR); Valuates forecast $33.85 billion by 2028 at 6.2% a year Market Research Future (2026); Valuates Reports via PR Newswire

#### Key uses

| Use | Share | Annual volume | Why this commodity | Alternatives |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| **Academic and educational research** | 33% | about $10.2 billionbasis | Universities and research institutes buy broad catalogues of reagents in small packs for teaching and research; research budgets drive demand. Market Research Future (2026) | shared core facilities kit-based and automated assays that use less reagent |
| **Pharmaceutical and biotech R&D and quality control** | 30% | about $9.3 billionbasis | Drug discovery, process development and GMP release testing need certified solvents, reference standards and biochemicals; MRFR names healthcare and pharma the fastest-growing segment at 5.0-5.35% a year. MRFR (growth); share indicative | in-house purification outsourced testing labs |
| **Industrial testing and QC (chemicals, food, environment, electronics)** | 22% | $6.79 billionbasis | Factories and contract labs test raw materials, products, water and emissions to standards that specify reagent grades. Market Research Future (2026) | online analysers rapid test kits |
| **Clinical and diagnostic laboratories** | 8% | about $2.5 billionbasis | Hospital and reference labs use stains, buffers and reagents alongside instrument-specific diagnostic kits (HS 3822 covers both). indicative share | closed instrument-reagent systems |
| **Government and public laboratories** | 7% | about $2.2 billionbasis | Forensic, customs, food safety, public health and defence labs; MRFR puts growth at 4.41% a year. MRFR (growth); share indicative | outsourcing to private labs |

Academia (33.1%) and industrial ($6.79 billion, 22%) are from MRFR 2025; the other shares are indicative and fill the remainder.

#### From raw material to user

1. **Commodity chemical** Acids, salts, solvents and biochemicals bought in bulk, e.g. technical acetonitrile, a by-product of acrylonitrile, or reagent salts from chlor-alkali and fertiliser chains.
2. **Purification** Distillation, sub-boiling distillation, recrystallisation, filtration to 0.2 micron, or chromatography to reach analytical, HPLC or LC-MS grade.
3. **Testing and certification** Each lot is tested against ACS, pharmacopoeia (USP, EP, IP) or ISO 17034 reference-material requirements and issued a certificate of analysis.
4. **Packaging** Glass or fluorinated bottles, ampoules, cold-chain packs with dry ice for enzymes; packaging is often the largest cost item for small packs (indicative).
5. **Distribution** Catalogue, e-commerce and distributor networks (VWR, Fisher Scientific, Sigma-Aldrich); top five suppliers hold an estimated 38-44% of revenue (MRFR 2025).

#### Three things to know

- Laboratory chemicals were a $30.87 billion market in 2025, growing about 4.6% a year (MRFR).
- Merck KGaA, Thermo Fisher and Avantor together hold an estimated 22-31% of revenue, and the top five 38-44% (MRFR 2025).
- North America is 31.9% of demand and Europe about $8.5 billion; Asia-Pacific grows fastest at about 5% a year, with China 38.2% of the region (MRFR 2025).
