# Reagents and high-purity lab chemicals: Production route

Same chemical, many grades: how purification creates the value

Source page: https://www.materialinsights.org/chemicals/lab_reagents/routes/

What this tab covers How it is made: the main production routes or, for product families, the main product types and technologies, compared on share of supply, inputs per tonne, plant scale, yield, co-products and unit cost.

Lab reagents are a product family defined by grade, not chemistry. Most are made by purifying commodity chemicals and packing them under quality systems. Biochemicals and molecular biology reagents are made by fermentation, enzyme production or synthesis of nucleotides and peptides. Reference materials are made in small lots with certified values. The main categories below cover most sales.

#### Routes compared

| Route | Share of supply | Inputs per tonne | Typical scale | Yield | Co-products | Unit cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| **Analytical inorganic reagents (AR/ACS acids, bases and salts)** | not published | about 1.1-1.5 t technical chemical per t reagent after purification losses (indicative) | tonnes to a few kt/yr per site | about 70-90% (indicative) | mother liquors and off-spec material resold as lower grades | several times the bulk price per kg, mostly purification, testing and packaging (indicative) |
| **HPLC, LC-MS and spectroscopy solvents** | not published | about 1.1-1.3 t technical solvent per t (indicative) | kt/yr per plant (indicative) | about 80-90% (indicative) | solvent heads and tails, often recycled | follows technical solvent price plus purification; acetonitrile supply depends on acrylonitrile output (indicative) |
| **Biochemistry and molecular biology reagents** | biochemistry 29.3% and molecular biology $5.87 billion (19%) of 2025 revenue (MRFR) | not meaningful (sold by activity units) | grams to kilograms | not published | biological waste | high; value per gram can exceed $1,000 (indicative) |
| **Certified reference materials and analytical standards** | not published | not meaningful | milligrams to grams per vial | not published | none material | very high per gram (indicative) |
| **Carbohydrate analysis, cell culture and other specialty reagents** | carbohydrate analysis $2.16 billion and other types $3.41 billion (2025, MRFR) | not published | grams to tonnes | not published | not published | not published |

#### How each route works
**Analytical inorganic reagents (AR/ACS acids, bases and salts)**

Technical-grade acids and salts are recrystallised, distilled or sub-boiled in quartz or PTFE to cut trace metals, then filtered and packed in clean bottles. Grades run from laboratory reagent (LR) to trace-metal and ultrapure.

Simple process; margins depend on brand, quality systems and distribution.
indicative **HPLC, LC-MS and spectroscopy solvents**

Acetonitrile, methanol, water, hexane and others are distilled, dried and filtered to low UV absorbance, low residue and low particle counts.

Large-volume reagent line; exposed to acetonitrile shortages.
indicative **Biochemistry and molecular biology reagents**

Buffers, detergents, nucleotides, enzymes (polymerases, restriction enzymes), antibodies and kits are made by fermentation, purification and synthesis in GMP or ISO 13485 facilities.

Highest growth and margin; needs cold chain and biological QC.
Market Research Future (2026) **Certified reference materials and analytical standards**

Pure compounds or mixtures are prepared, characterised and certified for concentration and uncertainty under ISO 17034 and ISO 17025, for calibration of instruments.

Critical for regulated testing; few accredited producers.
indicative **Carbohydrate analysis, cell culture and other specialty reagents**

Sugars, stains, media components and specialty kits made by synthesis or extraction and sold with application data.

Niche and fragmented.
Market Research Future (2026) Unit economics are indicative ranges from the sources named; costs move with feedstock and energy prices, plant size and region.
