# Oilfield and mining chemicals: Cycles

How oil prices and rig counts swing chemical demand

Source page: https://www.materialinsights.org/chemicals/oilfield_chemicals/cycles/

What this tab covers How its prices and margins move: past booms and busts with price levels, the spread or margin that the industry watches, the drivers of the cycle and the metrics to track.

Revenue follows upstream spending: drilling and stimulation chemicals rise and fall with rig and frac counts, which follow oil prices with a lag of six to twelve months. Production chemicals are steadier because they are dosed on producing wells. Prices are contract-based and not public; margins of listed service firms and barite unit values are the best gauges. The floor is the producing well base, which needs chemicals regardless of price; the ceiling is set by operators' capital discipline. In 2026 the Hormuz shock raised oil prices but cut Gulf output, splitting the market.
The spread to watch **No public spread; proxy is service company chemicals segment margin**

ChampionX production chemicals adjusted EBITDA margin 20.8% (Q1 2025) is the cleanest public gauge; after the merger SLB reports it within its segments. Barite unit value against rig count is a proxy for drilling fluid tightness.

#### Booms and busts

1. 2014-2016

Oil price collapse; drilling and fracturing fell sharply and chemical prices were cut.

Brent fell from over $100/bbl in mid-2014 to under $30/bbl in early 2016 (indicative, EIA); US barite FOB mine $125/t in 2014 (USGS MCS 2015 via barite tile)

2. 2021-2023

Recovery after COVID; deeper wells and higher freight lifted drilling material costs.

US ground barite $167/t (2021), $145/t (2022), $218/t (2023) (USGS MCS 2026 via barite tile)

3. 2024-2025

Rig counts fell and operators cut activity; production chemicals revenue slipped while margins held. SLB bought ChampionX.

ChampionX production chemicals revenue $523.4 million in Q1 2025, down 11% from $590.1 million in Q1 2024; margin 20.8% vs 20.0% (8-K); barite $210/t (USGS)

4. 2026

US-Israeli strikes on Iran from 28 February brought shipping through Hormuz to a near-halt; Gulf output fell, oil prices spiked, and non-Gulf producers were pushed to drill more.

Brent $71.1/bbl average in February, $120.4 in April, $116.8 in September 2026 (World Bank via crude oil tile)

#### What drives the cycle

- **Oil and gas prices.** Set drilling and completion budgets with a lag of two to four quarters.
- **Well depth and lateral length.** Longer wells use more mud, barite and frac fluid per rig, so volume can rise while rig counts fall.
- **Water cut of mature fields.** More produced water per barrel means more inhibitors, demulsifiers and biocides.
- **Metal mining growth.** Copper, nickel and lithium output drives flotation and solvent extraction reagents.

#### Metrics to track

| Metric | Why it matters | Where to track it |
|---|---|---|
| **Baker Hughes rig count** | Leading indicator for drilling fluids | Baker Hughes, weekly |
| **US frac spread count** | Stimulation chemical demand | Primary Vision / industry sources |
| **Barite unit value and imports** | Drilling material tightness | USGS |
| **SLB, Halliburton segment margins** | Pricing power of service firms | quarterly results |
