# Oilfield and mining chemicals: Emissions

Why mineral muds carry far less carbon than organic actives

Source page: https://www.materialinsights.org/chemicals/oilfield_chemicals/emissions/

What this tab covers The greenhouse-gas footprint per tonne, split by lifecycle phase (feedstock, production, movement, use, end of life), the global total, other environmental impacts, levers and low-carbon routes, India's position, and where the investment opportunity lies.

Per t of formulated chemical, cradle-to-gate. Intensity: indicative; barite tile. Global total: not published.

#### Footprint by lifecycle phase

| Phase | Intensity | Share | Main sources of emissions | Notes | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| **Feedstock** | not published | – | petrochemical actives, acrylonitrile, amines, base oils | | indicative |
| **Production / process** | not published | – | blending and drying; barite grinding | | indicative |
| **Movement** | not published | – | bulk shipping of barite from India and China; trucking to well sites | | indicative |
| **Use** | not applicable as direct emissions; enables oil and gas production | – | the oil and gas produced emit far more than the chemicals themselves | methanol hydrate inhibitor is partly lost to flare or vent (indicative) | indicative |
| **End of life** | not published | – | muds and cuttings reinjected, landfilled or treated; chemicals in produced water | | indicative |

#### Other environmental impacts

Marine toxicity of offshore discharges; groundwater risk from fracking fluids; cyanide and xanthate toxicity at mines; carbon disulphide from xanthate breakdown; large volumes of drilling waste.

#### Levers to cut emissions

- Recycle produced water as frac and injection water, cutting freshwater and disposal
- Substitute persistent offshore chemicals under OSPAR rules with biodegradable ones
- Shift portfolios to mining reagents for copper, nickel and lithium (indicative)
- Use production chemicals and monitoring that reduce leaks and flaring (indicative)

#### India

India's role is upstream: barite (3.0 Mt in 2025) and guar. Domestic oilfield chemical emissions are not published.
Emission figures are indicative global averages from the life-cycle studies named; actual footprints vary widely by site, energy mix and method.

#### Low-carbon routes

| Route | Intensity | Cost premium | Status | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| **Bio-based drilling and production chemicals (ester base fluids, plant-derived surfactants, guar)** | not published | not published | commercial in offshore markets with strict discharge rules (indicative) | indicative |
| **Reagents for energy-transition metals (copper flotation, lithium and nickel solvent extraction)** | not published | not applicable | growing with metal output (indicative) | indicative |

For a climate investor Oilfield chemicals are tied to fossil production, so the climate case is narrow. The investable angles are produced-water treatment and reuse, lower-toxicity offshore chemistry, and the move of the same chemistry into mining reagents for transition metals. Dorf Ketal is the main Indian player; SLB, Halliburton and Clariant are the global ones. What has to be true: mining reagent demand grows with copper and battery metals, and regulators keep tightening discharge rules.
