# Oilfield and mining chemicals: Production route

Muds, inhibitors and frack fluids: how each family works

Source page: https://www.materialinsights.org/chemicals/oilfield_chemicals/routes/

What this tab covers How it is made: the main production routes or, for product families, the main product types and technologies, compared on share of supply, inputs per tonne, plant scale, yield, co-products and unit cost.

This is a family of product types sold with field service. Drilling fluids are bulk mixtures of weighting agents, clays, polymers and base oils. Production chemicals are higher-margin specialty blends dosed continuously. Stimulation chemicals are large-volume polymers, guar and acids used in bursts during fracturing. Enhanced oil recovery uses polyacrylamide in large volumes on a few fields. Mining reagents are a separate set of sulphur and phosphorus organics and polymers. The biggest value lies with integrated service companies that bundle chemistry with engineering.

#### Routes compared

| Route | Share of supply | Inputs per tonne | Typical scale | Yield | Co-products | Unit cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| **Drilling fluids** | largest segment (IMARC 2025); about 35% indicative | barite is the largest component by mass of weighted muds (indicative) | grinding mills and mud plants near basins; 22 barite grinding mills in the US in 2022 (USGS) | not applicable | drill cuttings coated with mud | barite $210/t US ex-works (2025, USGS); mud cost per well not published |
| **Production chemicals** | about 30% (indicative); ChampionX Production Chemical Technologies $523.4 million revenue in Q1 2025, down from $590.1 million in Q1 2024 | not published (amine, fatty acid and phosphonate actives in solvent) | regional blending plants | not applicable | none | not published; segment adjusted EBITDA margin 20.8% (ChampionX Q1 2025) |
| **Stimulation and completion chemicals** | about 20% (indicative) | not published | bulk storage at frac sites | not applicable | flowback water | not published |
| **Enhanced oil recovery polymers and surfactants** | about 8% (indicative) | about 0.75 t acrylonitrile per t acrylamide (stoichiometric) | dedicated supply contracts of tens of kt/yr per field (indicative) | not applicable | polymer in produced water | tracks acrylonitrile |
| **Mining reagents** | separate market; size not verified | flotation reagent dose typically tens of grams per tonne of ore (indicative) | xanthate plants of 10-50 kt/yr, many in China (indicative) | not applicable | carbon disulphide release from xanthate decomposition | not published |

#### How each route works
**Drilling fluids**

Water-based muds use bentonite, barite, starch, carboxymethyl cellulose, xanthan and PHPA polymers. Oil- and synthetic-based muds emulsify brine in diesel, mineral oil or esters with emulsifiers and organoclays for hard shales and deepwater. Halliburton (Baroid) and SLB (M-I SWACO) dominate.

Essential and activity-driven; oil-based muds perform better but face discharge limits offshore.
IMARC 2025; barite tile (USGS MCS 2026; Minerals Yearbook 2022) **Production chemicals**

Corrosion inhibitors (imidazolines, quats), scale inhibitors (phosphonates, polymers), demulsifiers to split oil from water, paraffin and asphaltene inhibitors, hydrate inhibitors (methanol, MEG, kinetic inhibitors), H2S scavengers (triazine) and biocides. Dosed by pumps at wellheads and pipelines.

Recurring, sticky revenue tied to production; offshore products need environmental approval.
ChampionX Q1 2025 8-K (SEC) **Stimulation and completion chemicals**

Slickwater fracs use polyacrylamide friction reducers; gel fracs use guar crosslinked with borate; acid jobs use 15-28% hydrochloric acid with inhibitors; completion brines use calcium, sodium and zinc bromides. India's guar crop supplies much of the world's guar gum (indicative).

Large volumes and fast swings with US shale activity.
IMARC 2025; hydrochloric acid tile; bromine tile (indicative) **Enhanced oil recovery polymers and surfactants**

Partly hydrolysed polyacrylamide (HPAM) is dissolved in injection water at about 1,000-2,000 ppm to raise viscosity and push more oil to producers; alkali-surfactant-polymer floods add surfactants to cut oil-water tension (indicative).

Adds recoverable oil from existing fields; extends fossil production.
 acrylonitrile tile; indicative **Mining reagents**

Xanthates and dithiophosphates attach to sulphide minerals so air bubbles lift them in flotation cells; frothers (MIBC, glycols) stabilise the froth; depressants keep gangue down. Solvent extraction reagents purify copper and battery metals; cyanide leaches gold; flocculants thicken tailings.

Demand grows with copper and battery metal output; reagent toxicity and tailings are concerns.
indicative Unit economics are indicative ranges from the sources named; costs move with feedstock and energy prices, plant size and region.
