China's capacity wave and plants running at 70% What this tab covers Who makes it and how much: world capacity and output, utilisation, the top producing countries and companies globally and in India, concentration, new capacity coming, and each region's position.

| Measure | Figure | Detail | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| **World capacity** | about 40-45 Mt/yr bottle-grade (2025, indicative: 34.7 Mt in 2022 plus over 10 Mt announced for 2022-2025) | | Czapp, Dec 2022; indicative |

India makes PET resin at Reliance and IVL Dhunseri, integrated with domestic PTA and MEG (indicative); national PET resin demand is not published here. On recycling, 17 rPET plants hold FSSAI authorisation with about 300,000 t/yr of approved capacity (Procurement Resource, Mar 2026), against about 350,000 t a year of food-grade rPET needed at the 30% mandate (Readon, Jan 2026).

#### Position by region

| Region | Position |
|---|---|
| **US** | Mid-sized producer (Alpek, Indorama); state recycled-content laws (California 25% by 2025, 50% by 2030, per Readon) drive rPET demand. |
| **EU** | About 10% of capacity; Single-Use Plastics Directive requires 25% recycled PET in PET bottles from 2025 and 30% in all bottles by 2030; BOPET film prices up about 40% in Q2 2026 (ESM). |
| **India** | Integrated producers plus a fast-growing rPET sector driven by EPR; European recyclers bidding for Indian flake lifted prices in FY25 (Readon). |
| **China** | About 38% or more of capacity and still building; exports set Asian prices; operating rates about 70% (2025). |
| **Japan** | Small resin producer but high bottle collection and bottle-to-bottle rates (indicative). |
| **Middle East** | Exports MEG and PX feedstock rather than PET; 2026 Hormuz disruption raised MEG and PET costs in Asia. |
