# Polystyrene and EPS: Cycles

Flat demand, feedstock swings and single-use bans

Source page: https://www.materialinsights.org/chemicals/polystyrene/cycles/

What this tab covers How its prices and margins move: past booms and busts with price levels, the spread or margin that the industry watches, the drivers of the cycle and the metrics to track.

PS prices move with styrene, which moves with benzene and crude oil, plus a conversion margin that widens in tight markets. Demand is mature and partly declining in packaging, so the cycle is driven by feedstock and by styrene capacity in China. Margins are squeezed when styrene is oversupplied and buyers substitute PP. Regulatory shocks are unusually important: EU, Indian and US state bans on foam foodware have removed demand permanently, while building insulation rules add it.
The spread to watch **PS (GPPS or HIPS) minus styrene**

Covers polymerisation and margin; typically about $150-300/t (indicative). PS price levels were not retrieved; Supreme Petrochem's reported margins are the best public proxy for India (indicative).

#### Booms and busts

1. May 2020

A styrene vapour leak at LG Polymers' PS plant in Visakhapatnam killed at least 12 people and led to closure and tighter Indian scrutiny of styrene storage (indicative).

not applicable

2. 2021-2022

EU single-use bans on EPS foodware took effect in July 2021 and India's single-use plastics ban, including thermocol decoration and PS cutlery, took effect in July 2022.

not retrieved; demand effect only

3. 2023

Weak European styrene demand; the styrene-benzene spread in Europe was thin.

styrene FOB ARA $990.50/t vs benzene $919/t, a spread of $71.50/t (21 Nov 2023, Platts via Chemical Week, styrene tile)

4. March 2026

Hormuz disruption tightened Gulf styrene and benzene; Asian styrene hit a one-year high, lifting PS costs for import-dependent Indian producers.

Asian styrene $1,030/t on 2 Mar 2026, up 6.57% in a day (Platts, styrene tile); PS levels not retrieved

#### What drives the cycle

- **Styrene and benzene prices.** Styrene is 80-90% of cost; benzene follows crude and naphtha.
- **Appliance and electronics output.** HIPS for fridges and AC units tracks white goods, a growth market in India.
- **Construction and energy codes.** EPS insulation demand rises with building efficiency rules and cold-chain build-out.
- **Bans on single-use foam.** EU, India and US state bans remove food-service demand.
- **Substitution by PP and PET.** PP has taken much of PS's rigid packaging share.

#### Metrics to track

| Metric | Why it matters | Where to track it |
|---|---|---|
| **Styrene CFR China / CFR India** | Feedstock cost for PS | S&P Global Platts, ICIS |
| **GPPS and HIPS CFR China and India** | Import parity for Indian buyers | ChemOrbis, Polymerupdate |
| **Dalian styrene futures** | Real-time Chinese sentiment | Dalian Commodity Exchange |
| **Supreme Petrochem quarterly results** | Indian PS and EPS margin and volume | BSE/NSE filings |
