# PVC: Overview

Why farms and cities run on PVC pipe

What this tab covers What the chemical is, how big its market is, what it is used for (with shares, volumes, why it wins and what could replace it), and its chain from raw material to end user. Ends with three things to remember.

PVC is made by polymerising vinyl chloride monomer (VCM), which comes either from ethylene and chlorine or, mainly in China, from coal-based calcium carbide and acetylene. It is 57% chlorine by mass, so it uses less oil than other plastics, but carbide-route PVC is among the most carbon-intensive plastics. About 47 Mt is made a year (S&P Global, 2023). Most goes into long-lived construction products: pipes, profiles, cables and flooring. India uses about 4.5 Mt a year but makes only about 1.6 Mt, so trade remedies and Chinese export policy set Indian prices.
Volume about 47 Mt a year (2023, derived: S&P Global puts world PVC use at 13 lb (about 5.9 kg) per person in 2023, x 8.0 billion people; in line with the VCM tile) Market value about $31-38 billion a year (indicative: about 47 Mt x $650-800/t, 2024-2025 Asian levels) Growth about 3-4% a year globally; India 7-8% a year (Adani Enterprises 2026) S&P Global via Chemical Week, Apr 2024 (per-capita use, operating rate); VCM tile (GlobalData capacity; S&P Global CEH); Adani Enterprises integrated report 2026; value derived (indicative)

#### Key uses

| Use | Share | Annual volume | Why this commodity | Alternatives |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| **Pipes and fittings (water, sewage, irrigation, conduit)** | 45% | about 21 Mtbasis | Rigid PVC pipe is cheap, light, corrosion-proof and easy to solvent-weld; it lasts 50 years or more. It dominates irrigation and municipal water in India, where farm and water-supply programmes drive demand. VCM tile (indicative industry splits) | HDPE pipe ductile iron concrete PP-R and CPVC for hot water |
| **Window and door profiles, siding, fencing** | 18% | about 8.5 Mtbasis | Impact-modified rigid PVC is weather-resistant and insulating; uPVC windows are standard in Europe and growing in Indian cities. VCM tile (indicative) | aluminium timber fibreglass |
| **Films, sheets and flooring (calendered film, vinyl flooring, signage, leathercloth)** | 17% | about 8 Mtbasis | Plasticised PVC is flexible, printable and flame-retardant; luxury vinyl tile and sheet flooring are large markets. VCM tile (indicative) | linoleum polyolefin films ceramic and wood flooring |
| **Wire and cable insulation** | 8% | about 3.8 Mtbasis | Flexible PVC compounds are inherently flame-retardant and cheap, the default for building wire and low-voltage cable. VCM tile (indicative) | XLPE halogen-free polyolefin compounds |
| **Bottles, packaging, medical and other (blister packs, IV bags, tubing, coatings)** | 12% | about 5.6 Mtbasis | Clarity, barrier and sterilisability keep PVC in pharma blister packs and medical bags, though PET and polyolefins are displacing it in packaging because PVC contaminates PET recycling. VCM tile (indicative) | PET PP polyolefin medical films |

Shares follow the VCM tile (indicative industry splits); volumes use about 47 Mt (S&P Global per-capita basis, 2023). A Plastics Europe polymer share of about 12.7% of 430.9 Mt would imply about 55 Mt, but that total includes recycled and non-standard plastics, so 47 Mt is used.

#### From raw material to user

1. **Salt to chlorine** Membrane electrolysis of brine uses about 1.75 t salt and 2.5-2.8 MWh per t chlorine (chlorine tile).
2. **Ethylene or carbide to VCM** Ethylene route: about 0.47 t ethylene and 0.58 t chlorine per t VCM. Carbide route: about 1.4-1.5 t calcium carbide and 0.58 t HCl per t VCM with a mercury catalyst (VCM tile).
3. **Polymerisation** VCM is polymerised in water suspension in batch reactors of 50-150 m3 at about 50-70°C; conversion about 85-90% per batch, with unreacted VCM stripped and recycled (indicative).
4. **Drying and compounding** Resin is dried to a powder; converters add stabilisers, plasticisers (up to 30-40% in flexible grades), fillers and impact modifiers (indicative).
5. **Conversion** Extrusion into pipe and profiles, calendering into film and flooring, cable coating.
6. **Long use and end of life** Pipes and profiles last decades; Europe's VinylPlus programme reports about 0.7 Mt a year of PVC recycled (indicative, 2023).

#### Three things to know

- India uses about 4.55 Mt of PVC a year but has about 1.6 Mt of capacity, importing about 3 Mt (Adani Enterprises, FY2025-26).
- About 30% of world VCM capacity, mostly in China, uses coal-based calcium carbide, taking PVC's footprint from about 2 t CO2e per t on the ethylene route to 6-10 t (VCM tile, indicative).
- Suspension PVC CFR India was $715/t in Jul 2025 and $720/t in Feb 2026, while US export PVC hit a five-year low of $630/t (S&P Global).
