# Styrene: Cycles

One of the most volatile chemicals, and why Europe closed

Source page: https://www.materialinsights.org/chemicals/styrene/cycles/

What this tab covers How its prices and margins move: past booms and busts with price levels, the spread or margin that the industry watches, the drivers of the cycle and the metrics to track.

Styrene is one of the most volatile commodity chemicals. Its price is set by benzene plus a margin that swings with the supply-demand balance. China's 2019-2025 build-out created a long period of weak margins. Europe needs a styrene-benzene spread of $200-250/t to cover costs (S&P Global via Chemical Week); spreads far below that drove closures. Spikes happen when plants trip or feedstock is cut, as in 2026 when Kuwait Styrene and Chandra Asri declared force majeure. The floor is set by run cuts and closures of high-cost European and Asian units.
The spread to watch **Styrene minus (0.8 x benzene + 0.3 x ethylene), or simply styrene minus benzene**

European producers need about $200-250/t over benzene; it was $71.50/t on 21 November 2023 (Platts via Chemical Week). Recent Asian spreads not published in sources reached; OPIS reported negative margins for most benzene derivatives in April-May 2026.

#### Booms and busts

1. 2019-2024

China more than doubled capacity, from 9 Mt/yr to 22.6 Mt/yr (Argus), turning a 3.5 Mt/yr net import market (2010-2018 average, ICIS) into near balance and then net exports.

not published in sources reached; ICIS projected operating rates near 65-71% in its base case for 2019-2025

2. 2022-2023

European energy costs and weak demand forced closures: Trinseo shut Böhlen and Terneuzen and Maasvlakte POSM was idled. Europe turned to imports in early 2024.

Styrene FOB ARA $990.50/t versus benzene CIF ARA $919/t on 21 Nov 2023, a spread of $71.50/t (Platts via Chemical Week)

3. March 2026

The near-closure of Hormuz cut Gulf styrene exports and Asian naphtha. Kuwait Styrene shut its 450 kt/yr plant and declared force majeure on 8 March (Argus); SABIC declared force majeure on styrene on 26 March (ChemOrbis).

Asian styrene $1,030/t on 2 Mar 2026, up 6.57% in a day, a one-year high (S&P Global)

#### What drives the cycle

- **Chinese capacity.** About 47% of world capacity; each new unit cuts imports and pushes exports into Southeast Asia and India.
- **Benzene cost.** About two-thirds of cash cost; benzene shocks move styrene directly.
- **Appliance, packaging and construction demand.** PS, EPS and ABS demand follows Chinese consumer and property cycles.
- **Plant outages.** Large single trains (500-700 kt/yr) mean one trip can move regional prices.
- **Trade policy.** Chinese anti-dumping duties on US, Korean and Taiwanese styrene from 2018 reshaped flows (ICIS 2019).

#### Metrics to track

| Metric | Why it matters | Where to track it |
|---|---|---|
| **East China styrene inventories** | Weekly balance signal | Mysteel, CCF |
| **Styrene-benzene spread** | Margin and closure signal | Platts, ICIS, OPIS |
| **Dalian styrene futures** | Daily Chinese price discovery | Dalian Commodity Exchange |
