# Styrene: Overview

From foam cups to car dashboards and tyres

What this tab covers What the chemical is, how big its market is, what it is used for (with shares, volumes, why it wins and what could replace it), and its chain from raw material to end user. Ends with three things to remember.

Styrene monomer (SM) is made by alkylating benzene with ethylene to ethylbenzene and then stripping off hydrogen, or as a co-product of propylene oxide. It goes into polystyrene and EPS packaging and insulation, ABS for appliances and cars, and SBR rubber for tyres. China more than doubled its capacity from 9 Mt/yr in 2019 to 22.6 Mt/yr in 2024 (Argus) and reached about 23.5 Mt/yr in 2025 (Mysteel), turning from the largest importer to a net exporter. Europe has closed plants. India makes no styrene and imports all it uses.
Volume about 35 Mt a year of demand (2024, indicative, industry estimates) Market value about $35 billion (2024, indicative, basis: 35 Mt x about $1,000/t) Growth about 2% a year to 2030 (indicative) Argus, May 2025; Mysteel, Oct 2025 (China capacity); volume and value indicative

#### Key uses

| Use | Share | Annual volume | Why this commodity | Alternatives |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| **Polystyrene and expandable polystyrene (EPS)** | 42% | about 14.7 Mtbasis | Polystyrene is cheap, rigid and easy to mould into food packaging, disposable cutlery and appliance parts. EPS foam is a light insulation and protective packaging material with very low density. indicative share, industry estimates | polypropylene packaging paper and moulded fibre mineral wool and PIR insulation |
| **ABS and SAN** | 22% | about 7.7 Mtbasis | ABS combines acrylonitrile, butadiene and styrene to give tough, glossy parts for appliances, electronics casings, toys and car interiors. China held 58% of global ABS demand in 2018 (ICIS). indicative share; ICIS 2019 (China ABS share) | polypropylene compounds polycarbonate blends |
| **SBR rubber and styrene-butadiene latex** | 16% | about 5.6 Mtbasis | SBR is the main synthetic rubber in passenger tyres; SB latex binds paper coatings and carpet backing. indicative share | natural rubber acrylic latex |
| **Unsaturated polyester resins** | 7% | about 2.5 Mtbasis | Styrene is the reactive diluent in UPR for fibreglass boats, pipes, tanks and wind blades. indicative share | vinyl ester and epoxy resins low-styrene resins |
| **Other (styrenic block copolymers, ion exchange resins, other copolymers)** | 13% | about 4.6 Mtbasis | SBS and SEBS for asphalt modification and adhesives, and divinylbenzene resins for water treatment. indicative share | varies |

Shares are indicative global splits from industry reviews, applied to an indicative 35 Mt of demand.

#### From raw material to user

1. **Benzene and ethylene** About 0.79 t benzene and 0.28 t ethylene per t styrene (indicative, licensor data).
2. **Ethylbenzene** Zeolite-catalysed alkylation gives ethylbenzene at over 99% selectivity (indicative).
3. **Dehydrogenation** Ethylbenzene with superheated steam over iron oxide catalyst at about 600 C gives styrene and hydrogen.
4. **Alternative: POSM** Ethylbenzene hydroperoxide epoxidises propylene to propylene oxide, giving about 2.2-2.5 t styrene per t PO (indicative).
5. **Polymers** Polystyrene, ABS, SBR and UPR plants, often on the same site.

#### Three things to know

- China's capacity rose from 9 Mt/yr in 2019 to 22.6 Mt/yr in 2024 (Argus) and about 23.5 Mt/yr at end-2025 (Mysteel).
- European producers need a styrene-benzene spread of $200-250/t; it was $71.50/t in November 2023, and Trinseo shut 800 kt/yr in 2022-2023 (Chemical Week).
- The Middle East supplies over 20% of world styrene trade, all of it through Hormuz (S&P Global, Mar 2026).
