Why pipes, window frames and cables start here

What this tab covers What the chemical is, how big its market is, what it is used for (with shares, volumes, why it wins and what could replace it), and its chain from raw material to end user. Ends with three things to remember.

Vinyl chloride monomer (VCM) is a gas made mainly by chlorinating ethylene to ethylene dichloride (EDC) and cracking it, or in China by reacting acetylene from coal-derived calcium carbide with HCl over a mercury catalyst. More than 99% of VCM becomes PVC. World capacity was about 55-57 Mt in 2024-2025, with China close to half. The two routes have very different footprints: ethylene-based VCM is about 1.5 t CO2e per t, carbide-based several times that. India imports much of its VCM and PVC, which makes it a direct climate and trade issue.
Volume about 47 Mt a year (2024-2025, indicative: in line with PVC output) Market value about $25-30 billion (indicative: 47 Mt x $550-650/t, 2025) Growth about 3% a year, following PVC demand in Asia, India and the Middle East (indicative) GlobalData via Offshore Technology 2020-2021 (capacity 54.8 Mt in 2024, 57.1 Mt in 2025); S&P Global CEH VCM June 2025 (over 99% to PVC); value indicative

#### Key uses

| Use | Share | Annual volume | Why this commodity | Alternatives |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| **PVC pipes and fittings** | 45% | about 21 Mtbasis | PVC pipe is cheap, rigid, corrosion-proof and easy to join. It dominates water, sewer and irrigation networks, especially in India, where pipes are the largest PVC use. VCM demand therefore follows construction and farm irrigation. industry splits (indicative); polymerupdate Aug 2025 (India PVC end uses) | HDPE pipe Ductile iron Concrete |
| **PVC profiles, windows and doors** | 18% | about 8.5 Mtbasis | Rigid PVC profiles insulate well and resist weather; they are the standard window frame in Europe and China. industry splits (indicative) | Aluminium Timber |
| **Films, sheets and flooring** | 17% | about 8 Mtbasis | Plasticised PVC makes flexible films, vinyl flooring, banners and medical bags; paste PVC makes coated fabrics. industry splits (indicative) | Polyolefin films Linoleum and ceramic tiles |
| **Wire and cable insulation** | 8% | about 3.8 Mtbasis | PVC is flame-retardant thanks to its chlorine and is cheap to extrude onto copper. industry splits (indicative) | Cross-linked polyethylene Halogen-free compounds |
| **Bottles, packaging, medical and other** | 12% | about 5.6 Mtbasis | Clear rigid packaging, blister packs and medical devices; also chlorinated solvents made from VCM (under 1%). industry splits (indicative); S&P Global CEH VCM June 2025 | PET Polypropylene |

More than 99% of VCM is polymerised to PVC (S&P Global CEH 2025), so uses are PVC end uses. Shares are indicative industry splits applied to about 47 Mt.

#### From raw material to user

1. **Ethylene and chlorine** About 0.46-0.47 t ethylene and 0.58 t chlorine per t VCM in a balanced plant (stoichiometric basis).
2. **Direct chlorination** Ethylene plus chlorine gives EDC at about 99% selectivity over an iron chloride catalyst.
3. **Oxychlorination** Ethylene, HCl and oxygen give more EDC, recycling the HCl from cracking.
4. **EDC cracking** EDC is cracked at about 500 C in gas-fired furnaces to VCM and HCl.
5. **Polymerisation** VCM is polymerised in suspension (about 90% of PVC), emulsion (paste) or bulk reactors.

#### Three things to know

- More than 99% of VCM goes into PVC, so VCM is really a PVC story (S&P Global CEH 2025).
- China makes close to half the world's VCM, roughly 70% of it from coal via calcium carbide and a mercury catalyst (indicative).
- India had only 1.6-1.8 Mt of PVC capacity against about 4.1 Mt of demand in 2025, and imports VCM to feed some of its plants.
