# Ultra-pure wet chemicals: Emissions

Where the modest carbon footprint of purity comes from

Source page: https://www.materialinsights.org/chemicals/wet_chemicals/emissions/

What this tab covers The greenhouse-gas footprint per tonne, split by lifecycle phase (feedstock, production, movement, use, end of life), the global total, other environmental impacts, levers and low-carbon routes, India's position, and where the investment opportunity lies. Emission intensity 1.20 t CO2e per t range about 0.3 (sulphuric acid) to about 3 (IPA, TMAH) · indicative mix of base-chemical intensities from related tiles (H2O2 1.2, HF 0.75, IPA 1.8, sulphuric acid 0.05) plus purification energy and dedicated logistics

Per t of electronic-grade wet chemical as delivered, cradle-to-gate. Intensity: related chemical tiles; derived (indicative). Global total: not published.

#### Footprint by lifecycle phase

| Phase | Intensity | Share | Main sources of emissions | Notes | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| **Feedstock** | about 0.65 t CO2e per t | 55% | production of base acids, peroxide, ammonia and IPA | Indicative | related tiles (indicative) |
| **Production / process** | about 0.35 t CO2e per t | 30% | distillation, sub-boiling, ion exchange, cleanroom filling, ultra-pure water | Indicative | Indicative |
| **Movement** | about 0.2 t CO2e per t | 15% | dedicated ISO tanks and drums moved across Asia and returned empty | Local supply cuts this | Indicative |
| **Use** | small direct emissions | – | chemicals become wastewater; ammonia and fluoride loads; some N2O from nitric acid use (indicative) | Fab wastewater treatment is energy- and chemical-intensive | Indicative |
| **End of life** | not published | – | neutralisation, fluoride precipitation as CaF2 sludge, acid reclaim | Recovered CaF2 and sulphuric acid can be reused (indicative) | Indicative |

#### Other environmental impacts

Fluoride and ammonia in wastewater; large ultra-pure water demand at fabs; HF and TMAH accident risk.

#### Levers to cut emissions

- On-site or nearby supply to cut transport and packaging
- Reclaim and reuse of sulphuric acid and IPA
- Fluoride recovery as synthetic CaF2
- Renewable power for purification and ultra-pure water
- Dilute chemistries and dry cleans

#### India

No electronic-grade production yet; India's base chemicals are made on a coal-heavy grid, so local purification on renewable power would be the lower-carbon option.
Emission figures are indicative global averages from the life-cycle studies named; actual footprints vary widely by site, energy mix and method.

#### Low-carbon routes

| Route | Intensity | Cost premium | Status | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| **Spent sulphuric acid reclaim near fabs** | not published | not published | practised in Taiwan and Korea (indicative) | Indicative |

For a climate investor Wet chemicals are the most localisable semiconductor material for India. The base acids, peroxide and IPA are already made at scale by Navin Fluorine, GACL and Deepak, and purification plus clean packaging is a smaller capex than a fab. The climate angle is modest: shorter supply lines, acid and fluoride recovery, and clean power. The commercial case depends on Indian fab volume (Micron Sanand now, Tata Dholera from about FY2029-30) and on partnering with a qualified Japanese or Korean supplier, as Tata's September 2026 MoUs with Fujifilm and JSR suggest.
