# Barite: Emissions

Why nobody has measured barite's carbon footprint

Source page: https://www.materialinsights.org/commodities/barite/emissions/

Why nobody has measured barite's carbon footprint What this tab covers The greenhouse-gas footprint of the commodity at a global level, split by lifecycle phase: extraction (or farming), refining and processing, movement, usage, and recycling or end of life. Intensities are per unit of product; the global total combines intensity with world output. Also covers other environmental impacts and the main levers to cut emissions.

Per t of API-grade ground barite; cradle-to-gate. Intensity: No published LCA found (2026 search) for barite. Global total: No published LCA found (2026 search).

#### Footprint by lifecycle phase

| Phase | Intensity | Share | Main sources of emissions | Notes | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| **Extraction** | not published | – | shallow open pits, diesel haulage, much hand-sorting in India, China and Morocco | Manual sorting keeps energy use low | USGS MCS 2026; content_v2 |
| **Refining / processing** | not published | – | jigging or flotation for low grades; grinding to API size; drying | Grinding electricity is likely the largest processing load | USGS MCS 2026 (process) |
| **Movement** | not published; transport is about 30% of final cost | – | 35,000-60,000 dwt bulk carriers from India, China and Morocco; barge, rail and truck to rigs | A high cost share signals that shipping may be a large part of the footprint | USGS Minerals Yearbook 2022 |
| **Usage** | not applicable directly | – | inert weighting agent in drilling mud; enables oil and gas production whose emissions are counted under those fuels | About 70% of world use is drilling | USGS Minerals Yearbook 2022 |
| **Recycling / end of life** | none | – | left downhole or disposed with cuttings; dispersed in paints and plastics | USGS: no recycling; EU end-of-life recycling input rate 0% | USGS MCS 2026; EU CRM 2023 |

#### Other environmental impacts

Mercury and cadmium impurities in barite limit offshore mud discharge. Spent muds and cuttings are a waste stream. Mangampet's depletion is a resource issue for India.

#### Levers to cut emissions

- Source closer to drilling basins to cut long sea and road legs (transport about 30% of cost)
- Use efficient grinding and low-carbon electricity at mills
- Recover weighting material from used mud with centrifuges where practical
- Use lower-grade 4.1 SG material to extend existing deposits rather than opening new ones

#### India

India is the largest producer (3.0 Mt) and exporter, so ocean freight from Indian ports to the US Gulf and Saudi Arabia is a notable part of the footprint; no Indian LCA is published (USGS MCS 2026; Comtrade 2024).
Emission figures are indicative global averages from the life-cycle studies named; actual footprints vary widely by site, energy mix and method.
