What this tab covers What the commodity is used for, why, in what volumes and with what alternatives, and its chain from mine or field to end user. Also the latest price moves, top recent news, three things to know, and buttons into each tab.

#### Key uses

| Use | Share | Annual volume | Why this commodity | Alternatives |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| **Weighting agent in oil and gas drilling fluids** | 90% | about 2.1 Mt a year in the USbasis | Barite (barium sulphate) is dense, at a specific gravity of about 4.2, chemically inert, soft enough not to wear pumps, and cheap. Ground into mud, it holds back formation pressure and prevents blowouts. Deeper wells need more barite per rig. There are no large-scale alternatives (USGS). USGS MCS 2026; IBM Indian Minerals Yearbook 2015 | Hematite and ilmenite (heavier, more abrasive) Calcium carbonate (lighter, acid-soluble) Manganese tetroxide (specialist high-density muds) |
| **Filler and extender in paints, plastics, rubber, paper and automotive primers and brake pads** | n/a | n/a basis | White, finely ground or precipitated barite adds weight, gloss and chemical resistance to coatings, sound-damping to plastics and friction stability to brake and clutch pads. It is chosen for brightness, inertness and density. USGS MCS 2026; EU CRM study 2023 | Calcium carbonate, talc and kaolin fillers Titanium dioxide for whiteness (costlier) |
| **Barium chemicals (barium carbonate, chloride, precipitated sulphate)** | n/a | n/a basis | Barite is the main source of barium. It is reduced to barium sulphide and converted to carbonate for glass, ceramics, ferrite magnets and electronic materials. EU CRM study 2023; IBM 2015 | Witherite (barium carbonate ore, rare) Strontium compounds in some ceramics |
| **Radiation shielding: high-density concrete and plaster** | n/a | n/a basis | Barite strongly absorbs X-rays and gamma rays, so it is used as aggregate in concrete walls around hospital X-ray rooms, nuclear plants and research reactors (USGS). USGS MCS 2026; EU CRM study 2023 | Lead sheet Magnetite or hematite aggregate Thicker ordinary concrete |
| **Medical contrast medium (barium meal)** | n/a | n/a basis | Ultrapure barium sulphate is opaque to X-rays and insoluble, so it outlines the gut in X-ray and CT scans without being absorbed (USGS). USGS MCS 2026 | Iodine-based contrast media Endoscopy |
| **Pipeline weight coating and casting mould release** | n/a | n/a basis | Barite adds weight to the concrete jacket that holds subsea pipelines on the seabed and is part of mould-release compounds in metal casting (USGS). USGS MCS 2026 | Iron ore aggregate in weight coatings |

Drilling share is from the US (more than 90% of sales, USGS 2026). The EU pattern is different (fillers 70%, drilling 20%, chemicals 5%, radiation shielding 5%; EU CRM 2023) because Europe drills little.

#### From mine to user

1. **1. Deposits** Bedded sedimentary deposits and veins, often with fluorite or lead-zinc. India's Mangampet deposit in Andhra Pradesh holds about 95% of Indian barite (C-DEP 2025); China holds 120 Mt of reserves (USGS 2026).
2. **2. Mining** Mostly open pit with simple equipment; world output about 8.7 Mt in 2025 excluding the US, led by India (3.0 Mt) and China (2.2 Mt) (USGS).
3. **3. Sorting and beneficiation** Hand-sorting, washing, jigging or flotation raise grade. Drilling grade needs at least 90% BaSO4 and specific gravity 4.15, or 4.20 offshore (IBM 2015); API added a 4.1 standard in 2010 (USGS).
4. **4. Export as crude lump** Crude barite ships in bulk from India, China and Morocco; India supplied 39% of US imports in 2021-24 (USGS) and 22.6% of world export value in 2024 (Comtrade).
5. **5. Grinding near the oilfield** Grinders in the US Gulf, Saudi Arabia and other drilling hubs grind lump to API powder; US grinders sold 2.3 Mt in 2025 (USGS).
6. **6. Drilling-fluid service companies** Mud companies blend barite into drilling fluids and deliver to rigs; demand follows rig counts and well depth.
7. **7. End of life** Barite pumped downhole stays there; there is no recycling (USGS) and EU end-of-life recycling input is 0% (EU CRM 2023).

#### Three things to know

- More than 90% of barite sold in the United States is used to weight oil and gas drilling fluids.
- US barite sales rose in 2025 even as US rig counts fell from 599 to 564, because wells are deeper.
- Only about 740 Mt of the world's roughly 2 billion t of barite resources are identified.
