World barley imports (HS 1003) were worth $9.5 billion in 2024, and exports $10.0 billion in 2023 (Comtrade). Australia shipped 22.6% of 2023 export value and France 20.7%, then Germany, Argentina and Canada. China took 39.9% of imports and Saudi Arabia 9.6%, for brewing and pig feed and for camel and sheep feed. Black Sea exporters such as Russia and Ukraine also ship large volumes. China imposed punitive duties on Australian barley in 2020 and lifted them in 2023.
