# Beryllium: Emissions

Why nobody has published beryllium's carbon footprint

Why nobody has published beryllium's carbon footprint What this tab covers The greenhouse-gas footprint of the commodity at a global level, split by lifecycle phase: extraction (or farming), refining and processing, movement, usage, and recycling or end of life. Intensities are per unit of product; the global total combines intensity with world output. Also covers other environmental impacts and the main levers to cut emissions.

Per t of beryllium content (metal, oxide or in master alloy), cradle-to-gate. Intensity: Materion disclosures via DitchCarbon (2023); USGS MCS 2026 (derived). Global total: Materion disclosures via DitchCarbon (2023).

#### Footprint by lifecycle phase

| Phase | Intensity | Share | Main sources of emissions | Notes | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| **Extraction** | low per tonne of ore: open-pit bertrandite in Utah; hand-sorted beryl from artisanal pegmatite mines | – | diesel equipment; manual labour for beryl | Bertrandite grades are low, so large ore tonnages are leached | USGS MCS 2026 (qualitative) |
| **Refining / processing** | likely dominant: acid leaching to beryllium hydroxide, conversion to fluoride, magnesium reduction, vacuum melting and powder processing | – | sulfuric acid, electricity, magnesium, dust control | Not quantified in public sources | USGS MCS 2026 (qualitative) |
| **Movement** | negligible per tonne | – | ore by truck and container; alloy strip by container | Not material | Qualitative |
| **Usage** | no direct emissions | – | connectors, springs, aerospace and defence parts | Enabling: lighter, stiffer space and aircraft structures save fuel or launch mass | Qualitative |
| **Recycling / end of life** | new and old scrap may supply 20-25% of US consumption; EU end-of-life recycling input rate 0% | – | Materion's take-back programme recovers about 40% of Be in alloy scrap | Most beryllium is diluted in copper alloy scrap and lost | USGS MCS 2026; EU CRM 2023 |

#### Other environmental impacts

Beryllium dust causes chronic beryllium disease, so workplace exposure, not carbon, is the main environmental and health issue. Artisanal beryl mining in Africa raises labour and safety concerns.

#### Levers to cut emissions

- Renewable power for hydroxide and metal plants (Materion bought about 5% renewable electricity in 2022)
- Expand alloy scrap take-back beyond the roughly 40% now recovered
- Near-net-shape powder processing to cut machining scrap
- Publish product carbon footprints so buyers can compare suppliers

#### India

India reports no beryllium mining or metal production and imports its needs for defence, nuclear and electronics uses, so its footprint sits in US, Kazakh and Chinese processing.
Emission figures are indicative global averages from the life-cycle studies named; actual footprints vary widely by site, energy mix and method.
