# Cement: Overview

Who actually buys cement, and why ready-mix dominates

What this tab covers What the commodity is used for, why, in what volumes and with what alternatives, and its chain from mine or field to end user. Also the latest price moves, top recent news, three things to know, and buttons into each tab.

#### Key uses

| Use | Share | Annual volume | Why this commodity | Alternatives |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| **Ready-mixed concrete (buildings, infrastructure, foundations)** | 72.5% | about 80 Mt in the USbasis | Concrete made with Portland cement is cheap, strong in compression, pourable into any shape and, with steel reinforcement, strong in tension too. Ingredients are local and plentiful, so no other material matches it for foundations, frames, slabs, bridges and dams at scale. USGS MCS 2026, Cement; Smil, Still the Iron Age (2016) | Structural steel and timber frames Asphalt (road pavements) Clay brick and stone masonry |
| **Concrete products (blocks, pipes, precast elements, pavers, roof tiles)** | 11% | about 12 Mt in the USbasis | Factory-made concrete units are cheap, durable and fast to install, and precasting gives tighter quality control than site pouring. USGS MCS 2026, Cement | Clay brick and tile Plastic and steel pipe Gypsum and timber panels |
| **Contractors (site-mixed concrete, mortar, soil stabilisation)** | 9% | about 10 Mt in the USbasis | Contractors buy cement directly for mortar, small pours, stabilising road bases and repair, where a bag or bulk delivery is simplest. USGS MCS 2026, Cement | Lime (soil stabilisation, mortars) Gypsum plaster Asphalt binders |
| **Other customers (building-material dealers, oil-well and government users)** | 7.5% | about 8 Mt in the USbasis | Retail and specialty buyers take bagged cement for small builds and repairs. In India, by contrast, most cement is sold in bags through dealers to individual home builders. USGS MCS 2026, Cement | Pre-bagged mortars and plasters Gypsum products |

Shares are US cement sales by customer type in 2025, with midpoints of the ranges USGS gives (70-75%, 11%, 8-10%, 5-10%). No global end-use split is published. World output was about 3.8 billion t in 2025.

#### From mine to user

1. **Quarrying** Limestone or chalk plus clay or shale is quarried next to the plant; the Rugby plant in England now gets its chalk through a 57-mile pipeline (Conway).
2. **Raw meal preparation** Rock is crushed, dried, proportioned and ground to fine raw meal.
3. **Kiln: calcining and clinkering** In the preheater and rotary kiln limestone gives up CO2 and the mix sinters into clinker; the kiln must turn 24 hours a day (Conway). World clinker capacity was about 3.8 billion t in 2025 (USGS).
4. **Cement grinding** Clinker is ground with gypsum and often fly ash, slag or limestone; blended cement was 63% of US shipments in January-September 2025, 95% of it portland-limestone Type IL (USGS).
5. **Distribution** Cement moves in bags or bulk by road, rail and sea to terminals; only about 94 Mt (about 2.4% of output) crossed borders in 2024 (UN Comtrade, USGS).
6. **Concrete production** Ready-mix plants, precasters and builders mix cement with sand, aggregate and water.
7. **End of life** Cement is not recycled, but crushed concrete is reused as aggregate (USGS).

#### Three things to know

- China made about 1.7 billion t of cement in 2025, roughly 45% of world output.
- In the first nine months of 2025, 95% of US blended cement shipments were portland-limestone cement (Type IL) (USGS).
- The US took 24% of world cement import value in 2024, the largest share of any country (Comtrade).
