How power sources triple ferrochrome's footprint

How power sources triple ferrochrome's footprint What this tab covers The greenhouse-gas footprint of the commodity at a global level, split by lifecycle phase: extraction (or farming), refining and processing, movement, usage, and recycling or end of life. Intensities are per unit of product; the global total combines intensity with world output. Also covers other environmental impacts and the main levers to cut emissions. Emission intensity 5.70 t CO2e per t range 1.9-6.0 · cradle-to-gate per t Cr contained, ICDA site LCAs on 2018 data: 1.92 at Vargon (Sweden, hydro and nuclear power), 5.7 at Eti Krom (Turkey, fossil grid), 6.0 at Tikhvin (Russia). Most supply is smelted on coal grids, so the high end is typical Global emissions per year 60.0 Mt CO2e per year 2024 · about 11.5 Mt Cr (from 16.8 Mt Cr2O3) x about 5-5.7 t CO2e/t (derived, indicative)

Per t of chromium contained in high-carbon ferrochrome (cradle-to-gate). Intensity: Sphera LCA for ICDA 2021, reported by Metal Dunyasi (Sep 2022); Nuss & Eckelman 2014 give 2.4 (indicative). Global total: World Mining Data 2026; ICDA LCA; derived.

#### Footprint by lifecycle phase

| Phase | Intensity | Share | Main sources of emissions | Notes | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| **Extraction** | about 0.7-0.8 t CO2e/t Cr at coal-grid sites | 13% | diesel and electricity for mining, crushing and gravity concentration; includes pelletising and sintering | Mining and beneficiation are 11-13% at coal-grid sites but 37% at Vargon, where low-carbon power shrinks smelting emissions | Sphera LCA for ICDA 2021 |
| **Refining / processing** | about 4.8-5.3 t CO2e/t Cr at coal-grid sites | 85% | electricity for submerged-arc furnaces (about 81-82% of smelting GWP on fossil grids), coke reductant | Electricity is the swing factor: 4.4-4.7 kg CO2e per kg Cr at Tikhvin and Eti Krom versus 0.7 kg at Vargon | Sphera LCA for ICDA 2021 |
| **Movement** | about 0.1 t CO2e/t Cr (indicative) | 2% | rail to port and bulk shipping of ore from South Africa to China | Transport is about 22% of smelting GWP at low-carbon Vargon, but a small share at coal-grid plants | Sphera LCA for ICDA 2021; share indicative |
| **Usage** | not applicable | – | stainless steel in use emits nothing | Stainless lasts decades with little maintenance and is fully recyclable; hexavalent chromium from plating and tanning is a toxic, not a climate, issue | EU CRM 2023 |
| **Recycling / end of life** | much lower than primary (no sourced figure) | – | remelting stainless scrap in EAFs | Recycled chromium in stainless scrap was 21% of US apparent consumption (2025) and EU end-of-life recycling input is 21%; scrap avoids ferrochrome smelting | USGS MCS 2026; EU CRM 2023 |

#### Other environmental impacts

Hexavalent chromium, formed in some chemical processes and slag handling, is a carcinogen and has contaminated groundwater around the Sukinda Valley mines in Odisha (indicative). Ferrochrome slag is large in volume but mostly inert.

#### Levers to cut emissions

- Use low-carbon power: Vargon's hydro and nuclear supply gives 1.92 t vs 5.7-6.0 t CO2e per t Cr on fossil grids (ICDA LCA)
- Pre-reduce and pre-heat pelletised ore with furnace off-gas, as Outokumpu does in Finland (indicative)
- Replace part of the coke with biocarbon (indicative)
- Raise stainless scrap use, which avoids new ferrochrome

#### India

India made 1.35 Mt of ferrochrome in FY2025 (BigMint), mostly in Odisha on coal-based captive and grid power, so its footprint is likely near the 5.7-6 t CO2e per t Cr seen at fossil-grid plants (ICDA LCA; India figure indicative).
Emission figures are indicative global averages from the life-cycle studies named; actual footprints vary widely by site, energy mix and method.
