#### Other environmental impacts

Artisanal mining in the DRC, nearly a third of national output by one estimate, carries child-labour and safety risks. Acid-leach tailings and HPAL residue storage in Indonesia raise water and biodiversity concerns.

#### Levers to cut emissions

- Renewable or hydro power for DRC mines and Indonesian HPAL in place of captive coal
- Refining closer to mines with clean power, shortening the DRC-China chain
- Battery recycling, which already supplies about 10% of cobalt
- Lower-cobalt and cobalt-free chemistries (LFP) that cut cobalt per kWh

#### India

India has no cobalt mine output and little refining; it imports cobalt chemicals, mainly via China. Cobalt is on India's 2023 critical minerals list and KABIL is seeking overseas assets.
 Emission figures are indicative global averages from the life-cycle studies named; actual footprints vary widely by site, energy mix and method.
