# Coconut oil: Movement

With the Philippines and Indonesia producing nearly 60% of world output in 2023 (FAOSTAT), most traded oil leaves their ports for Europe, the United States, China and other Asian buyers. India, the third producer at 17.6%, consumes most of its own output. Trade policy has shaped the industry before: Morgan notes that a US preferential duty let Philippine coconut oil compete well with other vegetable oils, while Manila pressed for a larger Philippine share of the profits.
