# Crushed stone: Extraction

Which rocks get blasted, and why quarries hug cities

What this tab covers How it is mined, drilled or grown, and processed into a tradeable form: the main methods compared, their unit economics, by-products, and the companies that do this work globally and in India.

Crushed stone is ordinary bedrock, blasted from quarry faces, crushed and screened into graded sizes. In the United States, about 70% of 2025 output was limestone and dolomite, 14% granite and 6% traprock. Quarries are sited close to markets because the product is heavy and cheap. In 2025 some 1,400 US companies ran 3,500 quarries in all 50 states. Specialty uses need high-purity limestone or dolomite, which is scarcer. Smil notes that limestone and dolomite fluxes are the easiest steelmaking inputs to secure (pdf p. 130).

Crushed stone is quarried from solid rock by drilling, blasting and crushing. The same basic method serves three markets with different quality needs: construction aggregate, which needs strength and grading; cement and lime, which need chemical purity; and industrial fillers, which need whiteness and fineness. Recycled concrete and asphalt and steel slag are secondary sources. Because stone is heavy and low value, quarries sit close to cities and transport dominates delivered cost.

#### Methods compared

| Method | Share of supply | Typical scale | Recovery / efficiency | By-products | Unit cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| **Aggregate quarrying (drill, blast, crush, screen)** | 72% of US crushed stone went to construction aggregate in 2025 (USGS) | US average about 0.43 Mt per quarry a year (1,500 Mt from 3,500 quarries, derived); Indian crushers 25,000-40,000 t a month (Indian Cement Review, 2021) | n/a | Quarry fines, increasingly sold as manufactured sand | US average value $18.50/t (2025, USGS); Vulcan freight-adjusted price $21.98/short t with cash gross profit $11.33/short t, implying about $10.65/short t cash cost (2025, derived) |
| **Captive limestone quarrying for cement and lime** | 17% to cement and 6% to lime in the US (USGS 2025) | Tied to kiln size | n/a | Off-spec stone sold as aggregate | Not available from the sources used |
| **Recycled concrete, asphalt and slag** | About 2.5% of US apparent consumption (37 Mt of 1,500 Mt, 2025, derived) | Mobile plants at demolition and road sites | n/a | Steel reinforcement recovered | Not available from the sources used |

#### How each method works
**Aggregate quarrying (drill, blast, crush, screen)**

Open benches are drilled and blasted, and rock is loaded into trucks for crushing and screening into sized products. Large US quarries run fixed plants for decades; smaller ones use mobile crushers.

Available almost anywhere; noise, dust and blasting make permits hard near cities.
USGS MCS 2026; Pit & Quarry (Apr 2026); Vulcan 2025 10-K **Captive limestone quarrying for cement and lime**

Cement and lime companies own quarries next to kilns and blend stone to a target chemistry. Higher purity is needed for lime and chemicals.

Secures raw material for decades; high-purity deposits are geographically limited (USGS).
USGS MCS 2026 **Recycled concrete, asphalt and slag**

Demolished concrete and milled asphalt are crushed and screened, often on site; slag from iron and steelmaking is processed into aggregate.

Saves landfill and haulage; variable quality limits use in structural concrete.
USGS MCS 2026 Unit economics are indicative ranges from the sources named; costs vary widely by deposit, region and year.

#### Who does it: global

| **SigmaRoc** | UK | limestone and lime; bought Dolomitas (Lithuania) producing about 3.5 Mt/yr of dolomite | 3.5 Mt dolomite a year (Dolomitas only) | 2026 | [Global Cement (Sep 2026)](https://globalcement.com/news/analysis/21251-update-on-lime-september-2026) |

#### Who does it: India

India's crushed stone is mostly limestone for cement (470 Mt of cement in 2025, USGS) and road and building aggregate from thousands of small crushers, many now also making M-sand. No national tonnage for aggregates is published. India is also a leading dimension-stone exporter, supplying 16% of US dimension stone imports and 25% of US granite imports by value in 2021-24 (USGS).
