# Garnet: Emissions

Why sand-mined garnet carries little carbon

Source page: https://www.materialinsights.org/commodities/garnet/emissions/

What this tab covers The greenhouse-gas footprint of the commodity at a global level, split by lifecycle phase: extraction (or farming), refining and processing, movement, usage, and recycling or end of life. Intensities are per unit of product; the global total combines intensity with world output. Also covers other environmental impacts and the main levers to cut emissions. Emission intensity 0.05 t CO2e per t range 0.02-0.1 · cradle-to-gate; derived from mineral-sand dredging or dry mining, gravity, magnetic and electrostatic separation, and gas drying Global emissions per year 0.04 Mt CO2e per year 2025 · about 0.05 t CO2e/t x 730,000 t; excludes ocean shipping

Per 1 t of processed garnet abrasive at plant gate (cradle-to-gate); delivery shown separately. Intensity: Indicative, derived; no public LCA found. Global total: Derived from USGS MCS 2026.

#### Footprint by lifecycle phase

| Phase | Intensity | Share | Main sources of emissions | Notes | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| **Extraction** | about 0.01-0.02 t CO2e/t (indicative) | 30% | dry mining and dredging of coastal sands; hard-rock crushing in the US and China | Hard-rock deposits need more energy than beach sands | Indicative |
| **Refining / processing** | about 0.02-0.06 t CO2e/t (indicative) | 60% | wet gravity separation, drying, magnetic and electrostatic separation, screening | Drying before dry separation is the main fuel use | Indicative; derived |
| **Movement** | Australia to US Gulf about 0.1-0.2 t CO2e/t by container (derived; outside the gate total) | 10% | trucking to Geraldton; container or bulk shipping across the Pacific and Indian Oceans | About 15,000-20,000 km at 5-10 g CO2 per t-km can exceed production emissions; share shown is for in-country movement only | IMO Fourth GHG Study 2020 (indicative); derived |
| **Usage** | not applicable directly | – | abrasive blasting and waterjet cutting consume compressed air and high-pressure pump power | The compressor and pump energy used in blasting and cutting is larger than garnet's own footprint (not quantified here) | Indicative |
| **Recycling / end of life** | recycled garnet avoids most of the shipping and processing footprint (indicative) | – | screening, washing and drying of spent abrasive | US recycling capacity 41,000 t a year; garnet can be reused multiple times without significant quality loss | USGS MCS 2026 |

#### Other environmental impacts

Coastal sand mining can harm beaches and fisheries; heavy-mineral sands contain monazite, so radioactive residues need control. India's beach-sand mining was halted over illegal over-extraction and monazite concerns.

#### Levers to cut emissions

- On-site recycling of blasting and waterjet garnet (several reuse cycles)
- Regional supply to cut long ocean hauls
- Renewable power and heat pumps for drying and separation
- Replacing silica sand in blasting improves worker health as well

#### India

India holds 8.6 Mt of reserves but produced about 15,000 t in 2025 (USGS) after private beach-sand mining was stopped by 2013-2019 rules; output is now from public-sector IREL.
Emission figures are indicative global averages from the life-cycle studies named; actual footprints vary widely by site, energy mix and method.
