# Grapes & wine: Cycles

Frost, hail and the slow boom-and-glut of planting

Source page: https://www.materialinsights.org/commodities/grapes/cycles/

What this tab covers Price history and what drives booms and busts, including this commodity's super-cycles, the drivers behind them and the metrics to track. It charts monthly prices (World Bank) with a switch to inflation-adjusted annual prices; where there is no World Bank series it uses USGS US prices.

Wine has two cycles. Vintages vary each year with frost, hail, heat and drought. Longer cycles come from planting: vines take years to bear, so booms create later gluts. Geman notes that Australian wine export volumes rose 170% between 1998 and 2003, with exports worth AU$2.4 billion; the industry later faced surpluses. Demand is now the main pressure. Wine drinking is falling in many traditional markets, so ordinary wine prices are weak while top estates keep their premiums.

No public benchmark price series for this commodity in the datasets used. Many minor materials trade on private contracts.

#### Super-cycles in grapes & wine

Grapes have no super-cycle and there is no World Bank grape or wine price series. The vine takes years to plant and bring into bearing, so wine markets show long cycles of planting booms and gluts. World grape output grew from 59.7 Mt in 1990 to 75.9 Mt in 2024 (FAOSTAT), with growth in China and India while the European vineyard shrank. Wine demand has been falling in traditional markets, and OIV put 2024 wine output at its lowest since 1961. Table grape trade has shifted to Peru and Chile, which supply northern winters.

1. 1998-2003

Australian wine boom: plantings and exports expanded fast, creating demand for weather hedges (Geman).

Australian wine export value rose 170% to AU$2.4 billion (Geman, citing 1998-2003 data)

2. 2003-2004

Frost in Champagne destroyed young buds; growers used reserve wines, then replenished them after the excellent 2004 vintage (Geman).

no price given; yield fell to 8,250 kg/ha against an average 10,400 kg/ha

3. 2000-2024

China's vineyard expanded from 0.29 Mha to 0.77 Mha and output from 3.4 Mt to 16.9 Mt (FAOSTAT).

no price series in the sources used

4. 2024-2025

Weather cut European wine output while demand fell; in India, Nashik's export season started weakly.

no price series; world wine output 225.8 million hl in 2024 (OIV); Nashik Jan-Feb 2025 exports down 24% to 66,000 t

#### What drives the cycle

- **Weather.** Frost, hail, heat and unseasonal rain decide yield and quality; weather explained 42% of losses in Australian Chardonnay output in one study (Geman).
- **Wine demand trends.** Falling wine consumption in Europe and China reduces demand for wine grapes.
- **Trade policy.** Tariffs and anti-dumping duties, such as China's duties on Australian wine from 2020 to 2024, redirect trade.
- **Residue and phytosanitary rules.** EU pesticide residue limits govern access for Indian table grapes.
- **Counter-seasonal supply.** Peru and Chile's harvests set northern-hemisphere winter prices.
