# Graphite: Emissions

Hydro power can cut graphite's footprint by over half

Source page: https://www.materialinsights.org/commodities/graphite/emissions/

Hydro power can cut graphite's footprint by over half What this tab covers The greenhouse-gas footprint of the commodity at a global level, split by lifecycle phase: extraction (or farming), refining and processing, movement, usage, and recycling or end of life. Intensities are per unit of product; the global total combines intensity with world output. Also covers other environmental impacts and the main levers to cut emissions. Emission intensity 16.8 t CO2e per t range 7.3 (Canadian project with hydro power) to about 17 (Chinese natural and synthetic); concentrate alone 1.0-2.2 · cradle-to-gate, Chinese natural graphite anode material Global emissions per year 4.00 Mt CO2e per year 2025 · natural concentrate stage only: about 1.8 Mt x about 2.2 t CO2e/t (indicative); anode processing and synthetic graphite add substantially more and are not published

Per t of coated spherical purified graphite (battery anode material); cradle-to-gate. Intensity: Minviro LCA for Northern Graphite (Feb 2022); Engels et al. 2022 report about 9.6 for Chinese natural anode material (indicative). Global total: USGS MCS 2026; Minviro 2022.

#### Footprint by lifecycle phase

| Phase | Intensity | Share | Main sources of emissions | Notes | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| **Extraction** | about 1.0-2.2 t CO2e per t concentrate | – | diesel mining and flotation | Several tonnes of concentrate are needed per tonne of spherical graphite because spheronising loses much of the flake (indicative). | Minviro 2022 (Bissett Creek) |
| **Refining / processing** | the largest part of the 16.8 t figure (indicative) | – | spheronising mills, purification with hydrofluoric acid or thermal treatment, pitch coating and carbonisation; for synthetic, graphitisation at about 3,000 C | Synthetic graphite in coal-powered Inner Mongolia has an even higher footprint than the 17 t Fujian estimate. | Minviro 2022 |
| **Movement** | small (indicative) | – | container shipping of concentrate from Africa to China and anode powder to cell plants | Not quantified in the source. | Minviro 2022 (not quantified) |
| **Usage** | none directly; enables batteries and EAF steel | – | anodes in lithium-ion cells; electrodes in electric arc furnaces | Electrodes are consumed in EAFs, releasing about 3.7 t CO2 per t of carbon burned (stoichiometric, indicative). | Indicative |
| **Recycling / end of life** | minimal recycling; EU end-of-life recycling input rate 3% | – | graphite in black mass is usually burned or landfilled | Electrode and machining scrap is reused; refractory linings go into brake linings. | EU CRM 2023; USGS MCS 2026 |

#### Other environmental impacts

Hydrofluoric acid purification creates hazardous effluent, and graphite dust has caused air and crop pollution near Chinese mines. Synthetic graphite depends on needle coke from oil refineries and coal tar.

#### Levers to cut emissions

- Clean power for spheronisation, purification and graphitisation; the Canadian hydro case is 7.3 versus 16.8 t CO2e/t
- Thermal or alkaline purification in place of hydrofluoric acid
- Higher spheronisation yields and use of fines
- Recovery of graphite from battery black mass

#### India

India is the second-largest natural graphite miner (6.9% in 2024) and hosts HEG and Graphite India, large synthetic electrode makers that use grid power with a high coal share. New anode plants planned in India face the same grid intensity unless they contract renewables.
Emission figures are indicative global averages from the life-cycle studies named; actual footprints vary widely by site, energy mix and method.
