# Hafnium: Emissions

Why each tonne carries a heavy, allocation-driven carbon load

Source page: https://www.materialinsights.org/commodities/hafnium/emissions/

What this tab covers The greenhouse-gas footprint of the commodity at a global level, split by lifecycle phase: extraction (or farming), refining and processing, movement, usage, and recycling or end of life. Intensities are per unit of product; the global total combines intensity with world output. Also covers other environmental impacts and the main levers to cut emissions. Emission intensity 131 t CO2e per t range not published; economic allocation at 2008 prices; at 2025 prices (about $3,800/kg) hafnium would carry a larger share of the zirconium chain · cradle-to-gate, economic allocation within the zircon to nuclear zirconium chain Global emissions per year 0.01 Mt CO2e per year 2025 · 131 t x about 72 t output (derived, indicative), about 10 kt CO2e

Per t of hafnium metal, cradle-to-gate. Intensity: Nuss & Eckelman 2014, PLoS ONE (ecoinvent 2.2 data, economic allocation, 2008 supply mix; value read from Fig. 2, indicative). Global total: Derived from Nuss & Eckelman 2014 and Argus (2025).

#### Footprint by lifecycle phase

| Phase | Intensity | Share | Main sources of emissions | Notes | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| **Extraction** | small allocated share of zircon mining | – | mineral sands dredging and separation | Hafnium is about 1-2% of zircon's metal content, so it carries little of the mining burden | Qualitative |
| **Refining / processing** | dominant: carbochlorination, Zr-Hf separation by solvent extraction or extractive distillation, Kroll reduction with magnesium, vacuum distillation, electron-beam or arc melting | – | electricity and heat, chlorine and solvent use, magnesium reductant | Separation handles about 50 t of zirconium per tonne of hafnium, so allocation choice drives the result | Nuss & Eckelman 2014; Reuters (2023) |
| **Movement** | negligible per tonne (air or container freight of small lots) | – | shipments between France, the US, Germany and buyers | Tiny tonnages; air freight of high-value lots is possible but not quantified | Qualitative |
| **Usage** | no direct emissions; enabling: control rods for low-carbon nuclear power, more efficient gas turbines and chips | – | reactor operation, turbine efficiency | Not applicable as a direct emission | Qualitative |
| **Recycling / end of life** | minimal recycling; EU end-of-life recycling input rate 0% | – | some superalloy revert and new scrap recovery | Hafnium in superalloy scrap is usually remelted with the alloy rather than recovered | EU CRM 2023; USGS MCS 2026 |

#### Other environmental impacts

Chlorination and separation use hazardous chemicals (chlorine, solvents such as methyl isobutyl ketone and thiocyanate in some plants), producing waste needing treatment.

#### Levers to cut emissions

- Low-carbon electricity for Kroll reduction and melting
- Recover hafnium from superalloy scrap rather than diluting it
- Higher yields in Zr-Hf separation, cutting chemical use
- Recycle magnesium chloride from the Kroll step by electrolysis on clean power

#### India

India's Nuclear Fuel Complex makes nuclear-grade zirconium, which requires hafnium removal, but no Indian hafnium output is published. Its footprint is therefore not separately reported.
Emission figures are indicative global averages from the life-cycle studies named; actual footprints vary widely by site, energy mix and method.
