# Hafnium: Production

Why nobody can say how much hafnium the world makes

World hafnium output and reserves are not published, so its concentration cannot be measured directly. Output tracks zircon processing and, above all, demand for nuclear zirconium. World zircon concentrate production was about 1.2 Mt in 2025, led by Australia and South Africa. China and Germany were the leading exporters of unwrought hafnium. The EU's 2017 assessment, reproduced by Pitron, listed France and the United States as the main producers (pdf p. 178). The bottleneck is the small number of separation plants.

Company volumes are not published on a comparable basis.

#### Largest producers by company, India

India has zircon from IREL and KMML and makes nuclear-grade zirconium for its own reactors, but publishes no hafnium output and does not appear among world suppliers (EU CRM 2023). Hafnium is on India's 2023 critical list.
