FAOSTAT records 3.70 million tonnes of raw jute in 2024, up from 2.85 million in 2010 and 2.78 million in 1990. Bangladesh grew 56.4% and India 38.2%, with Cambodia a distant third at 4.1%. Together the two Bengal producers supply about 94.5% of the world crop. The HHI of 4,648 is far above the 2,500 threshold for high concentration. Geography explains it: few places combine the heat, rain and standing water that retting needs. India is also the largest maker of jute goods, many of them grain sacks for its own use.
