The United States grew 31.0% of world maize in 2024 and China 24.2%, followed by Brazil (9.4%), Argentina (4.7%) and India (3.3%). The HHI of 1,693 is moderate: output is essentially a US-China duopoly with a long tail. World output rose from 483 million tonnes in 1990 to 1,154 Mt in 2020 and 1,218 Mt in 2024 (FAOSTAT), about 2.5-fold, faster than wheat or rice. Hybrids, genetic traits and Brazil's expansion drove the gain. USDA puts the 2025/26 crop at 1,331 Mt. China consumes almost all it grows, so exports are concentrated in the Americas and Ukraine.
