# Oats: Emissions

A small crop with a small footprint

Source page: https://www.materialinsights.org/commodities/oats/emissions/

What this tab covers The greenhouse-gas footprint of the commodity at a global level, split by lifecycle phase: extraction (or farming), refining and processing, movement, usage, and recycling or end of life. Intensities are per unit of product; the global total combines intensity with world output. Also covers other environmental impacts and the main levers to cut emissions. Emission intensity 0.40 t CO2e per t range 0.25-0.6 · cradle-to-farm-gate grain Global emissions per year 9.00 Mt CO2e per year 2026/27 · 0.4 t CO2e/t x 22.7 Mt (indicative)

Per t of oat grain at farm gate; cradle-to-gate (retail oatmeal shown for comparison). Intensity: Typical farm-gate LCAs for temperate cereals (ecoinvent / Agri-footprint based summaries), indicative; Poore & Nemecek 2018 give 2.48 kg CO2e/kg for oatmeal at retail, including processing and packaging. Global total: derived from USDA PSD and indicative intensity.

#### Share of footprint by lifecycle phase

#### Footprint by lifecycle phase

| Phase | Intensity | Share | Main sources of emissions | Notes | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| **Extraction** | about 0.34 t CO2e/t | 85% | nitrogen fertiliser manufacture, field N2O, diesel | oats need less nitrogen than wheat | Typical farm-gate LCAs for temperate cereals (ecoinvent / Agri-footprint based summaries), indicative |
| **Refining / processing** | about 0.04 t CO2e/t for drying and cleaning | 10% | drying; milling adds dehulling, kilning and flaking energy | milling and packaging raise retail oatmeal to about 2.5 kg CO2e/kg in Poore & Nemecek | Typical farm-gate LCAs for temperate cereals (ecoinvent / Agri-footprint based summaries), indicative; Poore & Nemecek 2018 (Science), via Our World in Data (indicative) |
| **Movement** | about 0.02 t CO2e/t | 5% | truck and rail from Canadian prairies to US mills | rail is low-carbon per tonne-km | indicative |
| **Usage** | not in the boundary | – | cooking porridge; oat drinks; feed for horses and livestock | oat drink is about 0.9 kg CO2e per litre against about 3.2 kg for dairy milk (Poore & Nemecek 2018, indicative) | Poore & Nemecek 2018 (Science), via Our World in Data (indicative) |
| **Recycling / end of life** | not applicable | – | hulls burned for biomass energy or used as fibre; oat bran sold as food | food waste at home is the main end-of-life loss | content of this tile |

#### Other environmental impacts

Oats are a useful break crop in cereal rotations, cutting disease and input needs for the next crop.

#### Levers to cut emissions

- Lower-carbon nitrogen fertiliser and precision application
- Renewable heat for kilning at mills
- Biomass energy from hulls at mills

#### India

India grows almost no oats for grain and imports about 75 kt a year (USDA PSD 2026/27), so its footprint is embedded in imports from Australia and Canada plus shipping.
Emission figures are indicative global averages from the life-cycle studies named; actual footprints vary widely by site, energy mix and method.
