World oat output was 22.4 Mt in 2024, down 44% from 39.9 Mt in 1990 (FAOSTAT). It was just 19.2 Mt in 2010. The long decline began when tractors replaced horses, which had been the main consumers of oats. Canada grew 15.0% of the 2024 crop, Russia 13.4%, Poland 7.2%, Australia 5.9%, Finland 5.5% and Spain 5.2%. The HHI of 665 means production is unconcentrated. Canada is the key exporter, so prairie weather moves the market.
