# Palladium: Emissions

Why recycled palladium has a tiny fraction of the footprint

Source page: https://www.materialinsights.org/commodities/palladium/emissions/

What this tab covers The greenhouse-gas footprint of the commodity at a global level, split by lifecycle phase: extraction (or farming), refining and processing, movement, usage, and recycling or end of life. Intensities are per unit of product; the global total combines intensity with world output. Also covers other environmental impacts and the main levers to cut emissions. Emission intensity 28k t CO2e per t range 15,937-18,179 in IPA's 2030 scenarios; 497 for recycled palladium · cradle-to-gate, primary production in Russia, South Africa, Zimbabwe and the US, 2022 production year Global emissions per year 5.30 Mt CO2e per year 2025 · 190 t mine output x 28,094 t CO2e/t (indicative)

Per t of primary refined palladium; cradle-to-gate. Intensity: IPA, Life Cycle Assessment of PGMs, 2022 production year, executive summary (Apr 2025). Global total: USGS MCS 2026; IPA, Life Cycle Assessment of PGMs, 2022 production year, executive summary (Apr 2025).

#### Footprint by lifecycle phase

| Phase | Intensity | Share | Main sources of emissions | Notes | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| **Extraction** | large share; IPA gives no stage split | – | underground mining at Norilsk and the Bushveld; diesel; ventilation and cooling on coal-heavy grids | Russian nickel-copper ore carries more palladium per tonne than Bushveld ore, which helps explain palladium's lower average than platinum. | IPA, Life Cycle Assessment of PGMs, 2022 production year, executive summary (Apr 2025) |
| **Refining / processing** | large share: flotation, smelting to matte, base- and precious-metal refining | – | furnace power, reagents and SO2 handling | Palladium has the highest acidification potential of the PGMs (4,507 mol H+ eq per kg), reflecting Norilsk smelter SO2. | IPA, Life Cycle Assessment of PGMs, 2022 production year, executive summary (Apr 2025) |
| **Movement** | negligible: about 6 t CO2e/t by air (indicative calculation) | – | air freight of refined metal | Well under 0.1% of the total. | Indicative calculation using DEFRA freight factors |
| **Usage** | none directly; catalysts avoid pollutants | – | autocatalysts in petrol and hybrid cars | A catalyst's embedded emissions are tiny next to the tailpipe pollution it removes. | Not applicable |
| **Recycling / end of life** | 497 t CO2e/t, about 98% lower than primary | – | decanning and smelting spent autocatalysts, then refining | Recycling supplied 32% of 2025 supply; EU end-of-life recycling input rate is 12%. | IPA, Life Cycle Assessment of PGMs, 2022 production year, executive summary (Apr 2025); Johnson Matthey 2026; EU CRM 2023 |

#### Other environmental impacts

Norilsk has been one of the world's largest point sources of SO2, and a 2020 diesel spill there released about 21,000 t of fuel (Nornickel, indicative). Blue water use is about 244,000 kg per kg of primary palladium (IPA).

#### Levers to cut emissions

- Sulphur capture at Norilsk (Nornickel's Sulphur Programme) and at Bushveld smelters
- Renewable power for South African mines; IPA's 2030 scenarios cut GWP by up to 61%
- More recycling: recycled palladium emits about 497 t CO2e/t versus 28,094 primary
- Catalyst thrifting and switching some loading to platinum where that lowers total metal use

#### India

India mines no palladium and imports refined metal and finished catalysts. BS-VI norms raised PGM loadings in Indian vehicles, so domestic demand carries Russian and South African embedded emissions.
Emission figures are indicative global averages from the life-cycle studies named; actual footprints vary widely by site, energy mix and method.
