The world's most traded vegetable oil and its sea lane What this tab covers How it flows between countries: the largest bilateral trade routes drawn on a world map, 2024 UN Comtrade export and import values with the top exporters and importers by share, plus shipping routes, chokepoints and trade restrictions.

Palm oil (HS 1511) is the most traded vegetable oil, with exports worth $41.0 billion in 2024 (Comtrade). Indonesia shipped 48.8% of export value and Malaysia 33.0%, mostly through the Strait of Malacca. The Netherlands, at 2.9%, re-exports from Rotterdam refineries. India took 25.2% of imports, China 10.0% and Pakistan 8.7%. Indonesia uses export levies, domestic supply rules and biodiesel mandates to manage its market, and briefly banned exports in April 2022. The EU deforestation regulation will require proof that imports did not come from newly cleared land.
