# Perlite: Emissions

Why the expansion furnace dominates perlite's footprint

Why the expansion furnace dominates perlite's footprint What this tab covers The greenhouse-gas footprint of the commodity at a global level, split by lifecycle phase: extraction (or farming), refining and processing, movement, usage, and recycling or end of life. Intensities are per unit of product; the global total combines intensity with world output. Also covers other environmental impacts and the main levers to cut emissions. Emission intensity 0.15 t CO2e per t range 0.1-0.52 · cradle-to-gate; crude ore about 0.03 (ICE v2.0); expansion at 1.5-2.0 MMBtu per short ton (about 1.7-2.3 GJ/t) of gas gives about 0.1-0.13 at IPCC 2006 default of 56.1 kg CO2/GJ for natural gas; ICE v2.0 gives 0.52 for expanded perlite as an upper value Global emissions per year 0.60 Mt CO2e per year 2025 · about 0.03 t CO2e/t x 4.6 Mt crude plus about 0.1 t CO2e/t for expansion of most of it

Per 1 t of expanded perlite (cradle-to-gate, including crude mining and expansion). Intensity: Hammond and Jones 2011, ICE v2.0 (indicative); Perlite Institute; derived. Global total: Derived from USGS MCS 2026, ICE v2.0 and Perlite Institute.

#### Footprint by lifecycle phase

| Phase | Intensity | Share | Main sources of emissions | Notes | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| **Extraction** | about 0.03 t CO2e/t crude incl. crushing and sizing (indicative) | 20% | open-pit mining, crushing, drying and screening of crude | ICE v2.0 gives 0.66 MJ/kg embodied energy for raw perlite | Hammond and Jones 2011, ICE v2.0 (indicative) |
| **Refining / processing** | about 0.1-0.13 t CO2e/t (expansion furnace) | 70% | natural gas furnaces at about 870-1,100 C | Expansion uses 1.5-2.0 MMBtu per short ton (Perlite Institute) | Perlite Institute; derived |
| **Movement** | about 0.01-0.02 t CO2e/t crude, Greece to US East Coast (indicative) | 10% | bulk shipping of dense crude; trucking of expanded product | Expanding near the customer avoids shipping air | IMO Fourth GHG Study 2020 (indicative); derived |
| **Usage** | enabling: insulation and lightweight plasters reduce building energy use | – | loose-fill, board and plaster insulation; horticulture | Per m3, expanded perlite has a lower embodied carbon than polystyrene insulation (Perlite Institute, from ICE and EPD data) | Perlite Institute |
| **Recycling / end of life** | not published | – | horticultural perlite reused in growing media; construction perlite stays in buildings | EU end-of-life recycling input rate 42%; USGS has no recycling data | EU CRM 2023; USGS MCS 2026 |

#### Other environmental impacts

Quarry land use on islands such as Milos; dust in expansion plants. Perlite is largely amorphous, with lower crystalline silica than many minerals.

#### Levers to cut emissions

- Electric or hydrogen-ready expansion furnaces with renewable power
- Heat recovery from expansion furnaces
- Expand near the market so only dense crude is shipped
- Use in insulation where it displaces higher-carbon foams

#### India

India produces no perlite (USGS 2026) and took 5% of world perlite and vermiculite import value in 2024 (UN Comtrade); it imports crude and expands locally (e.g. Keltech Energies), so expansion emissions occur in India on gas or grid power.
Emission figures are indicative global averages from the life-cycle studies named; actual footprints vary widely by site, energy mix and method.
