# Potash: Characteristics

Granule size, chloride and the colour myth

Source page: https://www.materialinsights.org/commodities/potash/characteristics/

What this tab covers The supply and physical characteristics of the commodity. Supply: current production, inventories and stocks, capacity utilisation, geographic and producer concentration, how fast supply responds to price, the project pipeline and capital spending, and logistics and export flows. Material: the physical and chemical properties that set its grade, price and end uses (for example purity and conductivity for metals, API gravity, sulfur and energy content for fuels, moisture, protein and fibre quality for crops).

#### Supply volume characteristics

| Characteristic | Figure | What it means | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| **Current production volume** | about 49.0 Mt K2O mine output (2025e), up from 46.7 Mt | Canada 15.0 Mt, Russia 10.0 Mt, China 6.3 Mt, Belarus 6.0 Mt, Germany 3.0 Mt and Laos 2.4 Mt. World fertiliser use was 41.6 Mt K2O. | USGS MCS 2026, Potash |
| **Inventory and stock levels** | not published as a world figure | No government stockpiles in the US (USGS). Producers and importers hold commercial stocks; China's port inventories and India's IPL stocks are tracked by price agencies but were not available in the sources used. Demand is seasonal, so stocks build before spring. | USGS MCS 2026 |
| **Capacity utilisation** | about 74% of world capacity (49.0 of 66.1 Mt K2O, 2025) | Derived from USGS world capacity. Nutrien produced 13.97 Mt KCl against 20.6 Mt nameplate at six mines, about 68%. Spare capacity in Canada lets output rise within months. | USGS MCS 2026 (derived); Nutrien 2025 MD&A |
| **Geographic and producer concentration** | Canada 31.7%, top-3 (Canada, Russia, Belarus) 66.3%; HHI 1,836 (2024) | Few firms dominate trade: Nutrien (about 8.4 Mt K2O, roughly 17% of world output, derived from 13.97 Mt KCl at about 60% K2O), Mosaic, Belaruskali, Uralkali and K+S. A top-5 company share is likely above 60% (indicative). | World Mining Data 2026; Nutrien 2025 MD&A (derived) |
| **Supply elasticity** | short run medium (idle capacity); long run low: 8-10 years to build a mine | About 17 Mt K2O of unused capacity can be restarted quickly. New shaft mines such as Jansen take close to a decade and billions of dollars. | USGS MCS 2026; Mining.com (2026) |
| **Project pipeline and CapEx** | capacity to rise to 77.4 Mt K2O by 2029; greenfield capex about $2,000 per annual tonne | BHP Jansen Stage 1: $8.4 billion for about 4.1 Mt KCl a year, first output mid-2027. Most growth is in Laos and Russia. A Michigan mine (0.8 Mt MOP a year) won a conditional $1.26 billion DOE loan. Mines in Belarus, Brazil, Canada, Ethiopia, Morocco and Spain are planned after 2029. | USGS MCS 2026; Mining.com (2026) |
| **Logistics and export flows** | most output is traded; Canada 64.7% of world export value (2024) | Canpotex ships from Vancouver and Portland; Belarus and Russia ship via Russian Baltic ports since EU sanctions closed Klaipeda; Dead Sea potash leaves from Aqaba and Ashdod. Brazil (23.2%), China (20.6%) and the US (20.3%) are the largest importers. | Comtrade 2024; content tile |

#### Material characteristics Industrial mineral

Potash is sold by its potassium content, quoted as K2O. Muriate of potash is potassium chloride; sulphate of potash suits crops harmed by chloride. Granule size and strength decide whether it can be bulk blended with other fertilisers, and colour reflects trace iron oxide rather than quality.

| Property | Value / specification | Why it matters | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| **K2O content** | MOP 60-62% K2O (at least 95% KCl); SOP about 50-52% K2O; langbeinite about 22% K2O | Price is set per tonne of product at a standard grade; contracts quote 60% K2O | USGS MCS 2026; industry grades (indicative) |
| **Chloride** | MOP about 47% Cl (stoichiometric) | Chloride-sensitive crops such as tobacco and potatoes need SOP at a premium | Chemistry; USGS |
| **Sulfur and magnesium** | SOP about 17-18% S; langbeinite about 22% S and 11% Mg (indicative) | Adds secondary nutrients and justifies higher prices | Industry grades (indicative) |
| **Granule size** | granular 2-4 mm for blending; standard 0.2-0.8 mm for NPK granulation (indicative) | Granules must match DAP and urea size to avoid segregation in blends | Industry norms (indicative) |
| **Crush strength and dust** | granules typically above about 2-3 kgf crush strength (indicative) | Weak granules break into dust during long sea voyages | Industry norms (indicative) |
| **Colour and solubility** | red MOP from trace hematite; white MOP is purer and fully soluble (indicative) | White grades are needed for fertigation and industry | USGS; industry practice (indicative) |
