# Potash: Emissions

A light footprint, unless gas dries the product

Source page: https://www.materialinsights.org/commodities/potash/emissions/

What this tab covers The greenhouse-gas footprint of the commodity at a global level, split by lifecycle phase: extraction (or farming), refining and processing, movement, usage, and recycling or end of life. Intensities are per unit of product; the global total combines intensity with world output. Also covers other environmental impacts and the main levers to cut emissions. Emission intensity 0.25 t CO2e per t range 0.1-0.6 · cradle-to-gate, scope 1 and 2; conventional Saskatchewan mines at the low end, solution mines and gas-fired drying and crystallisation at the high end Global emissions per year 20.0 Mt CO2e per year 2025 · about 82 Mt KCl product (49.0 Mt K2O at 60%) times 0.25 t/t; excludes shipping

Per t of muriate of potash (KCl product), cradle-to-gate at the mine; shipping shown separately. Intensity: Nutrien sustainability reporting (about 0.2 t CO2e/t, indicative). Global total: Derived from USGS MCS 2026 (indicative).

#### Footprint by lifecycle phase

| Phase | Intensity | Share | Main sources of emissions | Notes | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| **Extraction** | about 0.05-0.1 t CO2e/t (indicative) | 30% | electric continuous miners, hoists, ventilation; solution mining uses gas-fired heat | grid carbon intensity matters (Saskatchewan grid is coal and gas heavy) | Indicative |
| **Refining / processing** | about 0.1-0.2 t CO2e/t (indicative) | 70% | flotation, gas-fired product drying, compaction; crystallisation in solution mines | Mannheim SOP adds furnace fuel | Indicative |
| **Movement** | about 0.05-0.15 t CO2/t from Saskatchewan to Brazil or China (indicative) | – | rail of about 1,500 km to Vancouver, then 10,000-20,000 km by sea; bulk carriers emit roughly 3-10 g CO2 per tonne-km depending on size (IMO Fourth GHG Study 2020, indicative) | Outside the boundary above, but can equal the production footprint | IMO Fourth GHG Study 2020 (indicative); route lengths approximate |
| **Usage** | no direct emissions | – | KCl does not emit greenhouse gases in soil | Balanced K raises nitrogen use efficiency, which can cut N2O per tonne of crop (indicative) | Indicative |
| **Recycling / end of life** | not applicable | – | potassium dissipates into soils and crops | Not recycled (USGS; EU CRM 2023 recycling input rate 0%) | USGS MCS 2026; EU CRM 2023 |

#### Other environmental impacts

Salt tailings piles (mostly NaCl) and brine can salinise groundwater and rivers, notably the Werra in Germany. Dead Sea evaporation ponds affect lake levels.

#### Levers to cut emissions

- Electrify mines and dryers on low-carbon power
- Use heat recovery and gas-to-electric steam in solution mines
- Ship on larger, more efficient vessels and shorter routes (Laos to China)
- Dry-stack or backfill tailings to cut salt releases

#### India

India imports all its MOP (6.1% of world import value, 2024), so its footprint is mostly overseas production plus long sea voyages; potash derived from molasses at distilleries is a small local source with no published footprint (Comtrade; content tile).
Emission figures are indicative global averages from the life-cycle studies named; actual footprints vary widely by site, energy mix and method.
