# Potash: Overview

Why almost all potash ends up on farmland

What this tab covers What the commodity is used for, why, in what volumes and with what alternatives, and its chain from mine or field to end user. Also the latest price moves, top recent news, three things to know, and buttons into each tab.

#### Key uses

| Use | Share | Annual volume | Why this commodity | Alternatives |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| **Fertiliser: muriate of potash (KCl) applied straight or in NPK blends to grains, oilseeds, sugar cane, oil palm, fruit and vegetables** | 85% | about 41.6 Mt K2O a yearbasis | Potassium is one of the three major plant nutrients and has no substitute. It regulates water use and disease resistance and is removed in every harvest, so soils must be replenished. MOP is the cheapest form at about 60% K2O, ships as a dry bulk granule, and is mined from huge deposits, so it supplies most potash fertiliser. USGS MCS 2026, Potash | None for the nutrient itself (USGS) Manure, crop residues and glauconite (low K, local only) Potash derived from molasses (India, small) |
| **Fertiliser: sulphate of potash (SOP) and potassium magnesium sulphate for chloride-sensitive crops (tobacco, potatoes, fruit, vegetables, tea)** | n/a | n/a basis | Some high-value crops suffer from chloride, and SOP adds sulphur. It costs more than MOP because it is made either from rare sulphate brines (Great Salt Lake, Qinghai) or by reacting KCl with sulphuric acid in Mannheim furnaces. USGS MCS 2026, Potash | Potassium nitrate MOP where chloride tolerance allows |
| **Industrial chemicals: potassium hydroxide and carbonate for soaps, glass, batteries, food processing and pharmaceuticals** | 8% | about 3.9 Mt K2O a year (indicative)basis | Electrolysis of KCl gives caustic potash, used where sodium will not do: soft soaps, alkaline batteries, biodiesel catalysts and specialty glass (potassium strengthens TV and phone glass). Potassium carbonate goes into glass and food. EU CRM study 2023; USGS MCS 2026 | Sodium hydroxide and soda ash where potassium is not essential |
| **Oil and gas drilling fluids, de-icing, water softening and other minor uses** | n/a | n/a basis | KCl brines stop shale swelling in oil and gas wells, and KCl is used as a lower-chloride de-icer and in water softeners. These uses take small tonnages but rely on cheap MOP. USGS MCS 2026 | Sodium chloride (water softening, de-icing) Other inhibitors in drilling muds |
| **Animal feed and human nutrition (potassium supplements, salt substitutes)** | n/a | n/a basis | Potassium is an essential nutrient for animals and humans (USGS). Feed-grade KCl and potassium salts are used in livestock rations and low-sodium salt blends. USGS MCS 2026 | Natural potassium in forage and food |

Fertiliser share is derived from USGS world fertiliser use (41.6 Mt K2O) and mine output (49.0 Mt K2O) in 2025; the EU study puts fertiliser at 92% and chemicals at 8% of EU use; in the US about 85% of potash sales went to fertiliser (USGS 2026).

#### From mine to user

1. **1. Exploration and deposit development** Potash lies in evaporite beds left by ancient seas, often 1,000-3,000 m deep (Saskatchewan, Urals, Pripyat basin). BHP's Jansen Stage 1 cost $8.4 billion for about 4.1 Mtpa, with first output in mid-2027 (Mining.com 2026).
2. **2. Mining** Conventional underground mining with continuous miners, or solution mining where beds are too deep or irregular. Nutrien's six Saskatchewan mines have 20.6 Mt KCl of nameplate capacity (2025).
3. **3. Milling and beneficiation** Sylvinite ore (KCl plus salt) is crushed and the KCl separated by froth flotation, heavy-media separation or dissolution and recrystallisation, giving about 60% K2O product.
4. **4. Compaction and grading** Fines are pressed into granular MOP for bulk blending; standard (fine) grade goes to NPK granulation plants. White soluble grades serve industry and fertigation.
5. **5. Export marketing** Canpotex (Nutrien and Mosaic) and Belarusian Potash Company market to more than 40 countries; Canpotex's 2025 sales went 39% to Latin America, 29% to other Asia, 11% to China and 6% to India (Nutrien 2025).
6. **6. Ocean freight and port handling** Shipped in bulk from Vancouver, Portland, St Petersburg, Klaipeda (until EU sanctions), Aqaba and Ashdod to Brazil, China, India, the US Midwest and Southeast Asia.
7. **7. Distribution and blending** Importers such as Indian Potash Ltd and Brazilian distributors store, bag and sell MOP or blend it into NPKs; in India it is sold at subsidised prices under the nutrient-based subsidy.
8. **8. Farm application** Applied before or at sowing; world fertiliser use was 41.6 Mt K2O in 2025, projected at 45.3 Mt in 2029 (USGS).

#### Price movement snapshot 2026-10-25
Potassium chloride (World Bank monthly) 368 $/mt Month 2026-09 1 week **no daily price** 6 months **-3.4%** World production 47.7 m tonnes, 2024 Largest producer Canada 31.74% of world Reserve life 120 yrs reserves ÷ 2025 output

#### Three things to know

- The US imported 92% of its potash consumption in 2025; Canada supplied 79% of imports over 2021-24 (USGS).
- The Dead Sea, worked by Israel and Jordan, contains nearly 2 billion tons of potassium chloride (USGS).
- Potassium is named after pot ash: wood ashes leached in pots and boiled down to a white salt (Conway).
