Why corn and soy stocks matter more than frozen chicken

What this tab covers How much is left and how much is held. For minerals and energy: reserves, current output, years of supply and recycling for the top five countries. For farm commodities: production, ending stocks and stocks-to-use for the top five producers (USDA, October 2026). It also covers inventories and stockpiles.

#### Top five producers: production and stocks (USDA, 2026)

| Country | Production | Share | Ending stocks | Stocks-to-use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| **United States** | 22,580 | 20.1% | 352 | 1.6% |
| **China** | 18,000 | 16% | 0 | 0% |
| **Brazil** | 16,000 | 14.2% | 0 | 0% |

#### Stockholding and policy

Chicken is not recycled and no major country keeps a public reserve. Frozen stocks are small: US broiler cold-storage stocks are forecast at 765 million lb at end-2026, under 2% of annual use of 42.6 billion lb (WASDE, Oct 2026). The real buffer is the breeder flock and hatchery capacity, which lets supply respond within months. India has no stockholding policy for poultry.

Live birds cannot be stockpiled, and a broiler cycle lasts only weeks, so supply adjusts quickly. Frozen chicken keeps for months, and cold-storage stocks are the main buffer. Feed stocks matter more than meat stocks: USDA corn and soybean balances drive chicken costs. Breeder flocks are the slow-moving capital stock. Avian influenza can wipe out breeder and layer flocks, and rebuilding takes months. By-products are rendered into feed and fats rather than recycled.
